1997
The Hanging Girl1997 is a documentary anchor in the reconstruction of Alberte Goldschmid’s case. The year appears in an interview record and a later transcript excerpt, and it is attached explicitly to investigators’ suspicion that someone may have driven a vehicle fitted with a shovel blade on a very early November morning. A July recollection adds another sequence of events, but the passage does not assign it a year.
Dated investigative records
Carl Mørck reads Christian Habersaat’s transcript at his desk. The record identifies an interrogation dated 12/9 1997: Synne Veland, aged forty-six, was a student in the fall semester and a middle-school teacher on leave from Hvidovre Municipality. The excerpt is dated 12/10 1997. These entries place questioning on consecutive dates as recorded, preserving the investigation’s documentary chronology without establishing, in the quoted record, what information was obtained at each stage.
The suspected November morning
When the team considers Kristoffer Dalby’s account of his wife’s mechanical skills, Carl Mørck identifies a specific possibility: she might have been capable of attaching a shovel blade to a vehicle and driving it on a very early November morning in 1997. The suggestion is a lead, not a finding of guilt. Rose confirms that investigators had asked students whether they heard anything or had particular suspicions, but had not asked them to account for their own movements that morning. Assad therefore proposes adding her to the list of possible suspects. The year gives the suspected act a place in the chronology; the missing alibi question leaves that chronology open to investigation.
A July sequence without a stated year
In a separate account, a woman dates her first meeting with Frank Brennan to the beginning of July, the day before a classic-car event. She recalls having sex with him in a secluded car park, then leaving when the classic cars arrived early, while Frank remained to deal with the fact that the car had been parked where it was not allowed. She also says she did not want her uncle to catch her with him and confirms that she was seeing Kristoffer Dalby at the time. The account supplies a close sequence and a personal context, but does not itself name the year. That distinction matters: unlike the November suspicion and the dated records, the July episode cannot be fixed to 1997 on the evidence given here.
