Academy's Stable of Senses

The Hanging Girl

The Academy's Stable of Senses is a building at the Academy whose loft holds a striking piece of evidence and whose darker interior becomes part of Valentina’s effort to make sense of a dream. It connects a belt identified by Shirley as belonging to Wanda Phinn with a day associated with Pirjo, Malena’s miscarriage, and Wanda Phinn’s arrival. The Stable is therefore more than a backdrop: its stored objects and distinctive appearance help turn separate observations into a troubling pattern.

Setting and physical character

Valentina describes the Stable of Senses as darker than the Academy’s other buildings. That difference matters when she later recalls a dream featuring a similar light-red hall. The building’s particular quality of light and shade makes it recognizable within her account, allowing her to associate the dream’s setting with a real place rather than with an unspecified interior.

The Stable also contains a loft where old clothes had been kept in a removal box. Jeanette had left those clothes there three years earlier. When she returned for them, the loft offered not only stored belongings but an unexpected discovery: her own belt was missing, and a different belt was in the box. The contrast between what Jeanette expected to find and what was actually there gives the Stable’s storage space a concrete role in the investigation of Wanda Phinn’s disappearance.

The belt found in the loft

Jeanette took the belt from the box. Shirley had helped her pack and had noticed its colors, buckle, and a scratch when Jeanette bent over her case. Those details stayed with Shirley and later allowed her to explain why she did not regard the belt as an ordinary match. She contrasted it with Jeanette’s missing belt, which was black, and noted that the discovered belt was two-tone and of a brand Shirley had bought.

Shirley also drew attention to the belt’s wear. One hole, the second-to-last, was stretched, marking the hole that had been used. Jeanette had to move the fastening out by at least two holes when she tried the belt on; Shirley contrasted that fit with Wanda Phinn’s very thin waist. Together, the distinctive scratch, color, buckle, brand, and altered hole formed the basis for Shirley’s conviction that the belt belonged to Wanda Phinn. Her conclusion is presented as her identification, supported by remembered particulars rather than by a formal confirmation.

The belt’s discovery gives the loft a retrospective significance. It had been an unnoticed object among old clothes, but once Shirley recognized its details, its presence in the Stable became a possible trace of Wanda Phinn. The scene turns on the difference between an object simply being stored and an object being recognized: Jeanette’s account of the box supplies the circumstances, while Shirley’s close attention makes the belt legible as evidence.

The Stable in Valentina’s dream

Later, Valentina tells Pirjo that Shirley’s account of the belt has brought the Stable into her thoughts about a dream. She recalls a similar light-red hall into which an angel disappeared. In her interpretation, the angel with black wings was Pirjo, whom she had seen from the beach on the day Pirjo drove to the Stable on her yellow scooter. Valentina connects the scooter to yellow marks appearing as the walls disappeared in the dream. This is her reading of the dream, not an independent confirmation of what occurred there.

Valentina places that sighting on the day Malena miscarried. She remembers that several people were looking for Pirjo during meditation hour because Atu wanted Pirjo to take Malena to the hospital. Valentina was relieved when Pirjo returned, believing that matters were as they should be and that Atu would be relieved. Seeing Pirjo afterward in the assembly hall, she experienced her return as reassuring and thought she would help Malena during her hospitalization. The dream’s apparently ominous black wings thus sit beside Valentina’s earlier image of Pirjo as a returning, helpful presence.

A place joined to a disputed chronology

Pirjo gives a different account of her movements that day. She says she felt unwell, rode to Nordodden to meditate, and found that it helped. She then parked her scooter in the Stable on a sudden impulse because she wanted to charge its battery. She also says she helped Malena and that Malena could either return quickly so the group could care for her or remain in hospital until she had recovered. Her account confirms a visit to the Stable while framing it as incidental to meditation and charging the scooter.

Valentina adds another date-based connection: Shirley had told her precisely when Wanda Phinn left London, and Valentina worked out that Wanda Phinn must have arrived on the same day as Malena’s miscarriage, Pirjo’s scooter, and the visit to the Stable. She says she will never forget that date. The Stable consequently anchors the overlap between Valentina’s direct observation and her recollection of the dream, while the belt found in its loft supplies a separate link to Wanda Phinn. Pirjo calls the convergence a strange coincidence and suggests that Wanda Phinn may have told Shirley a story. Valentina, by contrast, treats the dream and the repeated details as a warning and asks Pirjo to acknowledge its meaning. The building’s role is to hold these strands together without, by itself, resolving their truth.
