Celestial Sphere sign

The Hanging Girl

The Celestial Sphere sign is a painted sign associated with the house at Ølene and with Atu. In Pirjo’s account, it is also the object that links Atu to Alberte’s fatal collision: she says he attached it to the front of the VW and used it to fling Alberte into a tree. Pirjo claims she later burned it, destroying what might have been physical evidence of the crime.

The Sign at Ølene

The sign hung over the house at Ølene. Pirjo identifies it as the Celestial Sphere and reminds Atu that he painted it himself. Atu acknowledges remembering it, and recalls that he caught himself on its screws when he and Søren Mølgård took it down, bleeding quite a bit. His recollection confirms his connection to the object and its removal, though he denies knowing what Pirjo means when she first links it to Alberte.

Pirjo’s Account of the Collision

Pirjo says she found the sign in the VW with blood on it. She then accuses Atu of securing it to the vehicle’s front and using it to throw Alberte into a tree when he ran her down. Her explanation connects the sign’s physical presence in the vehicle to the collision and to the unusual manner in which Alberte’s body was found. These details are presented through Pirjo’s accusation; Atu responds that he does not understand what she is describing and says he had not known Alberte was dead.

Destruction and Significance

Pirjo says she burned the sign after finding it, describing the destruction as something she did for both of them. The object’s meaning therefore shifts from a public emblem above the house to alleged evidence of a killing—and then to evidence deliberately eliminated. Its screws and blood-stained presence in the VW give Pirjo’s accusation material particulars, while its destruction leaves the account dependent on her testimony and Atu’s reactions.
