Frederiksborg Sports Center
The Hanging GirlFrederiksborg Sports Center in Hillerød becomes the setting for the Health & Well-Being Fair, a temporary gathering where spiritual practices, commercial promises, and religious opposition share the same entrance and exhibition floor. The venue is also where Carl Mørck and Rose are directed toward Albert Kazambra, connecting the fair’s crowded public spectacle to their investigation.
The Fair and Its Setting
A note identifies the Health & Well-Being Fair as running from Tuesday, May 13, through Friday, May 16, 2014, from noon until 9 p.m. at Frederiksborg Sports Center. It adds that Tomas Laursen will come to the investigators’ office if called, placing the venue within the practical arrangements surrounding their inquiries.
At the entrance, a man waves a sign condemning the Alternative Cosmos as humbug and warns visitors against being seduced. He hands out leaflets while denouncing what he presents as witchcraft and a threat to faith. Only a few people accept them, and those recipients discard them in a trash can without reading them. The scene makes the entrance a point of visible argument, though the warning has little apparent effect on the fairgoers passing through.
A Marketplace of Spiritual Practices
Inside, the fair is presented as an unruly abundance of offerings. Visitors chant, make guttural sounds, raise their hands to sense one another’s auras and spiritual potential, and take part in trance channeling, drum therapy, reincarnation sessions, angel dance, tarot courses, healing, and other practices. Each promises a particular answer to a broad range of problems, while its practitioners regard their own method as the right path. The variety overwhelms Carl, who spots a draft-beer dispenser just before Rose arrives to tell him it is time to meet Albert Kazambra.
Kazambra’s booth, number 49E, is empty when they reach it, although his imposing image remains on display. A young woman shares the stand; her specialty is detecting earth radiation and water with willow twigs and a pendulum. The booth’s combination of a conspicuous image, an absent central figure, and another practitioner’s specialized service reflects the fair’s wider pattern of presenting many forms of spiritual expertise under one roof.
Role in the Investigation
Frederiksborg Sports Center is more than a dated address in the investigators’ arrangements: it is where Carl and Rose encounter the fair’s competing spiritual claims and approach Kazambra’s stand. The skeptical protest at the entrance contrasts with the busy interior, where visitors continue to explore therapies and courses despite the warnings outside. Within that setting, the venue brings the investigation into contact with the fair’s practitioners and the particular mixture of spectacle, belief, and advertised solutions that surrounds them.
