Hellerup

The Hanging Girl

Hellerup enters the investigation through the history of Ærenspris, an unsuccessful commune where a woman knew the man Department Q is seeking. Her recollection connects the place to a brief period in his past and gives the investigators a way to estimate his age.

Setting and Commune

Ærenspris was a late-hippie commune in Hellerup, organized around micro-macro food, a shared economy, and communal clothing. Its residents all took Ærenspris as their surname. The arrangement did not last: the woman who described it to Gordon was, as far as she knew, the only resident who kept the adopted name in the long run. Gordon said the commune had disbanded fifteen or sixteen years before the conversation with Carl and Assad.

Role in the Investigation

The woman’s memory was imprecise because the man had stayed only briefly, but she believed he lived at Ærenspris in 1994 or 1995. She also remembered that he celebrated his twenty-fifth birthday there. Carl and Assad used that detail to support their earlier estimate that he was approximately forty-five at the time of the investigation. Hellerup thus functions less as a present-day setting than as a point of convergence between a fragmentary communal past and the detectives’ effort to establish the man’s identity.
