Kalmar
The Hanging GirlKalmar is a destination and a site of care rather than a fully depicted city: Wanda Phinn looks toward it as a route back to safety after Pirjo Abanshamash Dumuzi deceives her, and Kalmar Hospital is where Pirjo later visits Malena during her recovery from a miscarriage. Across these appearances, the city marks the difference between help that can be imagined from a distance and vulnerability experienced in person.
A Destination Wanda Cannot Yet Reach
During the journey across Öland, Wanda sits behind Pirjo, holding lightly to her jacket and looking out toward the island beyond the sea. Pirjo keeps up a reassuring account of the landscape and the island’s windmills, presenting herself as a guide. But that apparent hospitality conceals a plan: she intends to use the side wind near the ridge to shake Wanda off, hoping the fall will kill her, and is prepared to hasten the outcome if it does not.
After Pirjo leaves her, Wanda calls for Atu Abanshamash Dumuzi and recognizes that she has been tricked. Her predicament is not merely that she has been separated from her intended destination; she expects the road back to someone who might help her reach Kalmar and the hotel to be long and tiring. The hotel gives the city a concrete practical meaning: it is associated with a place Wanda had been staying and with the possibility of returning to familiar shelter. Yet she has no immediate means of getting there, and Kalmar remains an aspiration rather than a refuge she can simply enter.
Wanda also refuses to regard the separation as Pirjo’s final victory. She plans to take a taxi to the Nature Absorption Academy the following day and confront whatever Pirjo does next. Her resolve makes Kalmar part of a larger geography of pursuit: the city is one possible point of return, while the Academy is the place toward which she intends to continue. The contrast is significant because both routes depend on transport and access that Wanda does not yet possess. Her plans express agency, but the immediate circumstances leave her stranded and uncertain how to get help.
Kalmar Hospital and Malena’s Recovery
A separate appearance places Kalmar at Kalmar Hospital, where Malena is in a gynecological ward on the fourth floor. The ward is described as sterile-looking, and Malena appears exceptionally pale. She tells Pirjo that the bleeding stopped the previous night and that she expects to be discharged later that day. The medical setting gives the city a more specific function than it has in Wanda’s journey: here, care is associated with a hospital room, treatment, and the prospect of release.
Pirjo’s arrival complicates that prospect of care. Malena might have hoped that Atu would come to show compassion, but Pirjo is the one who appears at the end of her bed. She asks how Malena is and responds with relief when she hears that the bleeding has stopped. The exchange could resemble concern, but its physical detail unsettles that reading: when Pirjo takes Malena’s hand, Malena’s body tightens with discomfort, and she briefly tries to pull away. Pirjo does not let her.
The City’s Narrative Function
The two strands give Kalmar distinct but connected meanings without establishing a detailed portrait of the city itself. For Wanda, it is a remembered point of orientation, linked to a hotel and the hope of finding assistance after Pirjo abandons her. For Malena, it is the location of a hospital stay following serious bleeding, with discharge expected soon. In one strand, access to the city is obstructed; in the other, its medical institution is present, but the visit by Pirjo makes the bedside encounter emotionally uneasy.
This limited geography sharpens the contrast between destination and arrival. Wanda can name a route she hopes to take but has been deceived and cannot yet act on it. Malena has reached medical care, yet her physical recovery does not make her comfortable with the person beside her bed. Kalmar therefore functions not as a self-contained setting but as a measure of what characters hope to regain or have reached, and of how little location alone guarantees safety, autonomy, or reassurance.
