Meeldijk Canal

The Hanging Girl

Meeldijk Canal is the discovery site of a man’s body in Vriesland, a suburb southwest of Rotterdam. The surrounding cycle path and the drainpipe beneath it shape the investigators’ account of how the body was brought into the canal.

Setting

The canal runs beneath a bicycle path through a drainpipe on the route into a park area. This arrangement links the path on either bank to the water below and provides the physical setting for the case’s initial reconstruction.

Discovery

Three days before the account is given, twelve-year-old Daniel Jippes found the body while riding his bicycle toward the park. The location of the discovery—beside a path used by cyclists, where the canal passes under it—makes the crossing point a key part of the evidence.

Scene Reconstruction

The man’s right foot and left wrist were connected by sturdy string that crossed the cycle path, descended on the opposite side, and passed beneath the path through the pipe. Investigators noted defensive bruising. Technicians inferred that the man had been restrained on the path, that the string had been pulled through the pipe, and that he had then been dragged into the water and through the pipe, where he drowned. The account presents this as their reconstruction, rather than as a directly witnessed sequence; the canal’s narrow, built-over passage is what makes that proposed route legible.
