Nature Absorption Academy London Branch
The Hanging GirlThe Nature Absorption Academy London Branch, housed in a simple apartment in Bayswater, is where Wanda first encounters Atu Abanshamash Dumuzi’s teaching. In this modest domestic setting, the Academy’s promise of renewal takes shape as a closely guided experience that leaves Wanda disoriented and ends with her fainting.
Setting and Introduction
The branch is presented as a London base for the Academy, operating from an apartment whose ordinary simplicity contrasts with the expansive claims made for its teaching. Shirley brings Wanda to an introductory session after learning about it through the Academy’s website, which describes Atu as a radiant spirit from a Scandinavian dream world and presents his teaching as a way to understand the energy and connections of humanity.
Teaching and First Encounter
Atu does not resemble the distant, conventionally staged gurus Wanda has encountered in brochures and on television. He moves among people seated on the floor, speaking with a smile and a glint in his eye. His teaching joins the universe to the energy of the sun and promises a renewal so complete that the body might resist attack and feel merged with the surrounding universe.
The session makes that promise bodily. Atu leads the group in a slow, repeated mantra, and Wanda feels her orientation—and her desire to return to ordinary reality—slip away. Later, after he touches her cheek, he leaves her for ten minutes, then returns and holds his palms a few centimeters from her forehead as he tells her to relax and presents her as ready for the next stage. Wanda faints. The apartment thus serves not only as the branch’s address but as the enclosed setting where the Academy’s language of cosmic renewal meets a striking physical loss of control.
Narrative Significance
The branch’s plain apartment setting gives the encounter a domestic intimacy rather than the grandeur associated with a public temple or formal institution. Within that small room, repeated words, Atu’s movement among the seated participants, and Wanda’s bodily response carry the scene from introduction into vulnerability. Her fainting marks the immediate consequence of her first experience there, while establishing the Academy as a place where its spiritual claims are conveyed through direct, embodied practice.
