Stable of Senses

The Hanging Girl

The Stable of Senses is a building at the Nature Absorption Academy where a discovery and a remembered visit converge around the same day. Its loft holds a box connected to Wanda Phinn’s disappearance, while its darker, rose-red hall figures in Valentina’s reconstruction of Pirjo’s movements on the day Malena miscarried. The building thus becomes a physical point of connection between clues that had seemed separate.

Setting and Physical Details

Unlike the other buildings at the Academy, the Stable of Senses is described as darker. Valentina recalls a similar light-red hall in a dream and identifies it as the hall where she saw an angel with black wings disappear. In her interpretation, the dream’s imagery is tied not only to the building but also to a particular visit: she had watched Pirjo arrive there on a yellow scooter from the beach below.

The Stable’s loft also preserves a practical, easily overlooked trace of its occupants’ past. When Jeanette collected old clothes from a removal box stored there, she found a belt where her own was missing. Its two-tone colors, buckle, and distinctive scratch matched details Shirley recognized; the belt’s fit also differed from Jeanette’s, who needed to move it out several holes. Shirley concluded that it had belonged to Wanda.

The Belt and Wanda’s Disappearance

The belt makes the building’s loft more than a storage space: it is where an object associated with Wanda resurfaces after she has left. Jeanette’s account of finding it gives Shirley a chain of concrete observations—the missing black belt, the replacement’s colors and buckle, and the scratch—that supports her identification. The discovery offers a material clue to Wanda’s fate without, by itself, establishing how the belt came to be in the box.

Pirjo’s Visit and Valentina’s Recollection

Valentina connects the Stable of Senses to the day Malena miscarried. Several people were looking for Pirjo during meditation hour because Atu wanted her to take Malena to the hospital. Valentina saw Pirjo return to the Stable on her scooter and took her arrival as reassurance that matters would be handled as they should be. She later remembered Pirjo in the assembly hall and believed she would help Malena during her hospitalization.

Pirjo gave a different account of the visit: she said she had gone to Nordodden to meditate because she was unwell, then parked her scooter inside the Stable on impulse to charge its battery. Valentina’s later connection of this day with Wanda’s journey from London makes the building a point of temporal overlap as well as a location: the belt found in its loft and Pirjo’s presence there belong to separate clues that Valentina brings together.
