The Celestial Sphere
The Hanging GirlThe Celestial Sphere is the name displayed above the entrance to a commune on Bornholm. First recalled by a local witness, it becomes a link between a remembered place and Carl Mørck’s investigation into Alberte’s death, directing the team toward people who might have known the commune’s members in 1997.
The Name on the Door
A witness remembered a large sign above the commune’s main door and tentatively recalled its wording as “The Celestial Sphere.” The recollection was not presented as certain, but the sign’s prominence made it a useful identifying detail. The same witness described the residents as peaceful, if eccentric, and said they had not caused trouble in the area.
A Clue in the Investigation
Later, Carl Mørck considered the papers and notices covering a wall, which advertised such subjects as DNA activation with archangels, Vedic sound therapy, transformation lectures, and psychic maps. He doubted that Christian Habersaat, whom he regarded as down-to-earth, had pursued those interests for himself; instead, he suspected the material was connected to Habersaat’s investigation. Carl then linked the VW Kombi man to a commune whose activities included midnight séances and dancing, and whose entrance bore the sign the witness had mentioned. Assad checked his notebook and supplied the remembered name: The Celestial Sphere.
Investigative Significance
The name turns a vague description of an unusual community into a lead the investigators can pursue. Carl asked Rose to contact associations on Bornholm and find out whether anyone had been in touch with a person from the commune in 1997. The sign therefore serves not as an explanation of the case, but as a point of recognition connecting the witness’s memory, the VW Kombi man, and the team’s search for Alberte’s killer.
