Julia

The Hellbound Heart

Julia’s return to Frank Cotton begins with an old fascination that overwhelms her approaching marriage to Rory. Her longing later becomes a willingness to sustain Frank’s return at terrible cost, binding desire to violence and finally to her own destruction.

Background and Frank’s Return

Before Julia met Frank in person, Rory’s account of his brother had already stirred her curiosity. The stories presented Frank as a man ruled by appetite and experience, and Julia became increasingly interested in him. When he appeared less than a fortnight before the wedding, his gold rings and tanned, close-fitting appearance seemed at odds with the monstrous figure Rory had described. Julia succumbed to his charm within hours.

As the wedding approached, Julia found herself thinking less about Rory and more about Frank. The brothers shared a lilt in their voices and an easy manner, but Frank possessed a desperate quality she did not associate with Rory. Julia later tried to explain their encounter as something she could not have indefinitely postponed; despite her remorse, she treasured the memory of what she understood as their first and last encounter.

Frank’s Return and the Decision to Help

In the Damp room, Julia found the boards where Rory’s blood had fallen already clean. She came to understand that Frank remained trapped beyond ordinary sight, in a place of bells and darkness, and that the blood had given him enough strength to make contact. When he indicated what he needed, Julia saw a possible route back to the man she had lost: if a small amount of blood had nourished him, a greater supply might restore him more fully.

Julia’s decision was driven by more than curiosity about Frank’s return. She remembered his intensity and wanted it again, imagining that once restored he might become devoted to her and answer to her wishes. She recognized that she had remained in love with him and had been grieving his absence; she resolved to provide what he needed without weighing the consequences. Her renewed good humor soon appeared to Rory as happiness in their new house, while he took up the redecoration with fresh enthusiasm. The domestic improvement thus concealed the purpose Julia had chosen for the blood she would bring to the room.

The Murders That Sustained Frank

Julia turned her decision into a repeated practice. When a guest said he was leaving briefly, she took a slaughtering knife from her pocket and attacked him before he reached the door. The killing supplied the blood she had promised Frank, but its effects made clear that the room was doing more than receiving it: the blood moved toward the wall, and the body was rapidly stripped of anything that could nourish him. Julia watched, impressed by the efficiency of the process. Frank was still not restored, and she continued to bring him victims.

On another occasion, Julia attacked a man while Frank waited in the room. His response gave her a measure of the intimacy she had hoped to recover: she heard his pleasure and, afterward, his approval. Yet the exchange did not make her secure in her chosen role. Looking down at a dead man’s hand, she felt near to being overwhelmed by self-revulsion. She saw the recent seductions ending in death, and recognized that her own ambitions had become as damned as Frank’s. Even so, when he asked her to heal him, she remained bound to the task she had undertaken.

Death and Final Image

During the final confrontation, Julia intervenes as Frank attacks Kirsty on the stairs. Kirsty pulls Julia into the path of his thrust, and Julia is wounded. Frank turns from Kirsty to Julia and feeds on her, leaving Kirsty to escape upstairs. Julia’s earlier hope that Frank might become devoted to her ends in a reversal: the intimacy she sought is replaced by his violence, and she becomes its victim.

Later, following Julia’s voice into the dining room, Kirsty finds the furniture reduced to smoldering remains and Julia dressed as a bride. Julia’s head lies in her lap, still calling for help. As the veil begins to move and a light grows beneath it, a voice identifies itself as the Engineer. The wedding image, set amid the ruined house and beside Julia’s severed head, turns the domestic future she once approached with Rory into a scene of violent collapse; the emerging presence shifts the focus from Julia’s fate to a new supernatural threat.
