The Foundling

Abandoned at Notre-Dame
Public rejection
A deformed child is exposed at Notre-Dame and mocked by those gathered around the foundling bed. Claude Frollo adopts him, giving him a home within the church.
A life shaped by refuge
The cathedral becomes Quasimodo’s shelter and world. His bond with its stones begins where society’s rejection leaves him isolated.
The Bellringer

The Cathedral’s Keeper
A new vocation
Claude Frollo makes Quasimodo bellringer of Notre-Dame. The bells give him a powerful relationship with sound, movement, and the architecture he inhabits.
Deafness and withdrawal
Years of ringing destroy his hearing. He retreats further from human speech, depending on gesture and on the cathedral’s familiar spaces.
The Public Scapegoat

Punished and Displayed
A deaf hearing
At the Châtelet, a deaf judge questions a deaf defendant. Their mutual inability to hear turns procedure into farce, yet Quasimodo is sentenced all the same.
A thirst unanswered
Flogged and mocked at the pillory, he asks for water and receives ridicule. Esmeralda’s compassion interrupts the crowd’s cruelty and changes his understanding of her.
The Sanctuary Rescue

A Sudden Intervention
Defiance of the sentence
As officials prepare to remove Esmeralda, Quasimodo descends the cathedral front, defeats the executioners, and carries her into Notre-Dame.
Protection without claim
He declares sanctuary and places her beyond immediate reach. His strength serves another person’s safety rather than his own standing.
The Silent End

Grief at Montfaucon
Loss discovered
Quasimodo finds Esmeralda gone from her cell and later sees her hanging at the gallows. He pushes Claude Frollo from the tower after witnessing his response.
A final embrace
Quasimodo disappears and is eventually found embracing Esmeralda’s remains at Montfaucon. His last act completes a devotion never returned in life.
