Frollo’s attempted assault on Esmeralda
The Hunchback of Notre DameFrollo’s attempted assault on Esmeralda is a nighttime intrusion into her cell, where the priest’s pursuit becomes an immediate threat and her attempt to resist becomes a fight to summon help. The scene turns on a small object: Quasimodo’s whistle, which Esmeralda finds on the floor and uses to raise an alarm. Its piercing sound interrupts Frollo, but the passage ends before the identity of the person who seizes him or the consequences are fully established.
Background and Approach
Esmeralda has fallen asleep in her cell with hopeful, sweet thoughts, dreaming of Phoebus as she often does. Her sleep is light; a noise nearby wakes her. In the darkness, she glimpses a figure watching through the window, briefly illuminated by a lamp. The figure extinguishes it as soon as she notices. She recognizes the intruder as Frollo, and the sight brings her earlier unhappiness back in a flash. The scene thus moves from sleep and imagined hope to recognition and fear before the assault itself begins.
The surrounding passage establishes that Frollo knows where to find the key to the red door between the cloister and the church, and also carries the key to the staircase leading to the towers. This access helps explain how he can reach the cloister and enter Esmeralda’s cell. His approach is not presented as a chance encounter: he comes into her sleeping space, and the brief concealment of the lamp precedes his entry.
Resistance and Escalation
Frollo slips in beside Esmeralda and encircles her with both arms. She tries to scream but cannot at first; when she can speak, she rejects him and demands that he leave. He pleads for mercy and presents his love as overwhelming suffering. That appeal does not alter her response. She struggles against him and tries to push him away, while he presses his desire rather than respecting her refusal.
The balance of force then shifts against Esmeralda. Frollo becomes stronger than she is, and she is left in his power despite her efforts. She calls for help and describes the attacker as a vampire. No human response comes from elsewhere in the cell or the surrounding space. Djali alone is awake, bleating in distress. The contrast makes the isolation of the cell part of the danger: Esmeralda’s voice cannot reach anyone, and the animal’s cry does not itself stop Frollo.
The Whistle and Interruption
As Esmeralda struggles along the floor, her hand touches something cold and metallic: Quasimodo’s whistle. She takes it up and blows with the strength she has left. The whistle produces a clear, piercing sound, changing the scene from an assault that has gone unanswered into an alarm that someone may hear. Frollo reacts at once, asking what the sound is.
Almost immediately, a vigorous arm raises him. The cell remains dark, so he cannot clearly distinguish who has seized him. The passage gives only partial indications of the figure: the sound of teeth chattering with rage and, in the scant light, the blade of a large knife above Frollo. It does not yet name the person holding him or narrate the outcome of the confrontation. The interruption is therefore decisive as a change in the immediate balance of power, but unresolved at the passage’s close.
Narrative Significance
The sequence opposes Frollo’s claim of love to Esmeralda’s unmistakable refusal. His language frames his desire as torment, while her actions and pleas establish the actual terms of the encounter: she wants him to leave, struggles against him, and calls for help. The scene does not treat his declaration as consent or reconciliation; it exposes the violence of pursuing her despite her resistance.
The whistle also links Esmeralda’s resourcefulness to Quasimodo’s earlier presence. She does not wait for help to arrive on its own: unable to make herself heard by calling, she recognizes the object within reach and uses it. Its sharp sound breaks the isolation of the cell, though the passage withholds whether it has summoned Quasimodo or someone else. That delay leaves the scene suspended at the instant when Esmeralda’s alarm has interrupted Frollo’s control but has not yet secured her safety.
