A Secret Invitation

A Secret Invitation
An Unexpected Assignment
Dalby summons the narrator and says that a major American weapons test is approaching. The narrator may bring an assistant, and Jean accompanies him to the remote installation.
An Unclear Purpose
The official briefing describes a novel, supposedly clean bomb and elaborate efforts to mislead foreign detection systems. The narrator does not yet know that his presence is part of a separate operation.
The journey places him inside a tightly monitored environment where access, movement, and conversation are controlled.
A Secret in the Bunker

A Secret in the Bunker
Equipment Left Behind
Jean takes the narrator to a neglected wartime blockhouse where Dalby previously carried a heavy box. They uncover electronic components, a weapon, and a coded note.
A Dangerous Discovery
The note refers to a neutron bomb and a submerged communication method. The narrator destroys one part of the evidence but realizes that someone is conducting a secret operation beyond the official test briefing.
Their discovery makes the atoll’s scientific spectacle a live intelligence conflict and deepens suspicion around Dalby.
Warning on the Tower

Warning on the Tower
An Old Friend’s Test
Barney Barnes confronts the narrator with a pistol and asks whether he has defected. He says the narrator is under suspicion and that the people monitoring them may be waiting for a pretext.
A Narrow Chance
Barney decides to trust their old connection enough to provide a weapon and a way to escape. He warns that the narrator is being watched and cannot safely rely on Dalby.
The encounter briefly gives the narrator evidence that his apparent allies may be involved in a plan to frame him.
The Explosion and Arrest

The Explosion and Arrest
A Fatal Device
The narrator is stopped on the restricted road while Dalby passes ahead. A flare ignites, the sky erupts, and a guard is found dead on a high-voltage tower.
Suspicion Settles on Him
The narrator is arrested, and the circumstances make him appear connected to the fatal sabotage. He realizes too late that the insulating gloves in his car may have been planted to implicate him.
The test-night crisis turns a covert intelligence operation into an accusation of murder and betrayal.
The Decoy Revealed

The Decoy Revealed
Reconstructing the Scene
The Brigadier shows the narrator footage of the road and explains how monitoring equipment recorded the movement around the tower. The narrator notices that the images show one vehicle where he knows there were two.
A Mechanical Deception
Later evidence reveals that Dalby used a small motorcycle decoy to manipulate the radar picture and that the high-speed television equipment was disposed of near the narrator. The operation was designed to make him appear guilty while hiding the real route.
The technical reconstruction exposes how surveillance itself was turned into a weapon against the person it was meant to observe.
