Carshalton
The IPCRESS FileCarshalton is identified as a house owned by Ross’s department and used as a detention site during the arrests surrounding Jay’s operation. It becomes a practical part of the roundup: first a destination for Jay, then a holding place for the arrested group, until its limited capacity forces Ross to arrange another centre.
The Departmental House
The narrator learns that Jay has been searched and taken to Carshalton, described as a house belonging to Ross’s department. Its purpose before these events is explicitly unknown to the narrator; the account does not establish its usual function or describe the building itself. Carshalton is therefore presented less as a familiar public institution than as a departmental property whose role becomes visible through its use in the operation.
Use During the Roundup
After the arrests, the detainees are being taken to Carshalton. By 3:30 in the morning, Alice reports to Ross that the house is bursting at the seams. Ross arranges an alternative detention centre because it is important to keep the detainees separate. The change of venue is a response both to crowding and to the need to prevent the arrested people from being held together.
Narrative Significance
Carshalton’s brief appearance shows the logistical aftermath of the roundup: arresting the network is only the beginning, and the authorities must also manage custody and separation. The house’s ownership by Ross’s department places the operation within an official apparatus, while the narrator’s admission that its purpose was otherwise unknown preserves the secrecy surrounding that apparatus. Its overcrowding, followed by the swift provision of another site, makes the scale of the arrests concrete without revealing further details about the house.
