Painter

Painter is a psychiatrist of considerable standing whose expertise becomes important to the IPCRESS operation: he helps bring Raven, a captive who has been partly brainwashed, back toward normalcy. Later, he leads a medical research effort into the lasting effects of brainwashing, but that work has yet to find a way to reverse them.

Identity and Introduction

Painter is described as tall and thin-faced and had accompanied the narrator on the Lebanon operation. His professional identity is disclosed when he helps Raven recover from brainwashing. The account gives little information about Painter’s life beyond his psychiatric standing and his work with the group.

Work with Raven

After Raven is recovered, Painter helps return him to something approaching normalcy. The narrator gives Painter a room with Carswell on the top floor of Charlotte Street, making his work part of the effort to deal with the consequences of the operation. The recovery is incomplete in the evidence: Raven has been brought back toward normal, not described as fully restored.

Painter’s work also has strategic importance. The narrator says that if Jay cannot be broken down, everything will depend on Painter and Carswell. Their role is therefore not simply to care for Raven; they are also part of the plan for what the group can do if its attempt to overcome Jay fails.
