Crocs
The Knife of Never Letting GoCrocs are predators of the New World wilderness whose danger is felt both as a practical risk on the journey and as a lasting physical trace on Aaron. The passages show Todd Hewitt watching for them near water and later connect them to the wound that has torn open Aaron’s face.
Presence in the Wilderness
While following Aaron’s trail toward Haven, Todd reaches a small creek descending toward the river and checks for Crocs before refilling the water bottles. The creek seems too small to be a likely danger, but the precaution shows that their presence is part of how he judges the landscape: even a brief stop at water calls for vigilance. The scene also contrasts that caution with the ordinary activity around the creek, where Manchee wades in and snaps at the small fish nibbling at his fur.
Attack on Aaron and Narrative Significance
Later, Aaron appears with his face returned to the condition it was in after Crocs tore it open: half of it is peeled away, with his tongue hanging through the gash in his cheek. He is still smiling, so the injury’s grotesque appearance stands beside his unnerving persistence. The episode establishes the Crocs as a source of severe physical danger, while Aaron’s visibly damaged face carries the consequence of their earlier attack into his later pursuit of Todd.
