Hewitt farm
The Knife of Never Letting GoHewitt farm is the home of Todd Hewitt, Ben, and Cillian, and a working farm that helps supply Prentisstown with meat and wool. Its divided fields and recurring labor define Todd’s everyday responsibilities, while events at the house draw the household into direct conflict with Mr Prentiss Jr and make the farm the setting for a sudden, consequential explosion.
Setting and Work
The farm lies about a kilometre northeast of Prentisstown. One half is devoted to sheep and the other to wheat; Ben and Cillian do most of the harder wheat work, while Todd has looked after the sheep since he was old enough to stand taller than them. His duties extend through feeding, watering, shearing, lambing, castrating, and butchering. Manchee was supposedly given to Todd partly so he could train him as a sheepdog, but Todd considers that plan unsuccessful.
The farm is one of three meat-and-wool providers for Prentisstown, down from five. Its workload is expected to grow: Todd says the flock of Mr Marjoribanks, whom he expects to die because of his drinking, will be added to theirs. He also recalls taking over Mr Gault’s flock after Gault disappeared two winters earlier. Todd’s account makes the farm’s contribution to the town inseparable from the work he performs and from his sense that this labor goes unacknowledged.
Household and Conflict
A small fission generator stands outside the front of the house. When Todd returns with Manchee, Cillian is lying beside it, repairing a fault; the generator’s recurring problems and Cillian’s grease-covered arms place practical maintenance alongside the farm’s animal and crop work. Todd explains that he had gone to the swamp to gather apples for Ben, but Cillian rebukes him for being away while there is work to do.
The farm also becomes the site of a confrontation with Mr Prentiss Jr. After the encounter escalates inside the house, Ben, Todd, and Manchee reach the kitchen to find Mr Prentiss Jr on the floor and Cillian holding his rifle, ordering him off the property. The moment turns the farm from a setting of household labor into a defended home, with Cillian asserting that the sheriff has no right to remain there.
The Explosion and Its Consequence
Later, Ben tells Todd that he and Cillian have always loved him and that Todd became their son when his mother died. Todd cannot bring himself to say that he does not want to leave. A sudden, exceptionally loud bang is then heard, and Todd identifies its source as the farm. The account establishes the explosion as coming from the place he is about to leave, but does not specify its cause or the extent of the damage.
The farm’s significance therefore rests on the contrast between its familiar routines and its abrupt rupture. It is where Todd has been given sustained work and a home with Ben and Cillian, where the household resists Mr Prentiss Jr, and where an explosion interrupts Todd’s departure. The sound links his separation from the farm to an immediate danger there without resolving what has happened to the property or its occupants.
