Jessica Elizabeth

The Knife of Never Letting Go

Jessica Elizabeth was the mayor of New Elizabeth and Todd Hewitt’s mother. In Ben’s account, she is both a leader who tried to organize people against an approaching danger and a parent who, when escape was no longer possible, entrusted her young son to Ben and Cillian to keep him safe. Her story reveals how the settlement became Prentisstown and gives Todd Hewitt a history of his family that had long been hidden from him.

Identity and Leadership

Jessica Elizabeth served as mayor of New Elizabeth, a settlement founded beyond an enormous Swamp. The location was chosen to keep the Noise of the wider New World from reaching the community unless its inhabitants allowed it to; the settlement was still noisy, but its residents were among people they knew and, for the most part, trusted. Jessica’s position placed her at the center of a community built around both separation and mutual familiarity.

Ben’s account also presents her as someone who could recognize danger before it overtook the settlement. He says that some people saw what was coming, and identifies Jessica as one of them. Her political role was therefore not merely ceremonial: when the threat became immediate, she organized an attempt to get people out.

The Attempt to Escape and the Fall of New Elizabeth

Jessica organized some of the girls and younger boys to flee across the Swamp. She intended to leave herself with the women and the men who had not lost their minds, but Mayor Prentiss’s men attacked before that group could escape. The distinction between those who had already fled and those still waiting to go helps define the desperate timing of the attempt: the first group was sent out, while Jessica and the remaining adults were caught before they could follow.

Todd Hewitt understands the consequence as he listens to Ben: New Elizabeth becomes Prentisstown. The settlement’s transformation is thus tied not to a peaceful change of name or leadership, but to an attack that closes off Jessica’s planned escape. The account does not establish what happened to Jessica after the attack, so her fate remains unstated in this recollection.

Motherhood and Legacy

Ben recalls that Jessica had not believed the violence would happen. He remembers her as full of love and hope in the goodness of others, a disposition that contrasts with the attack and the collapse of the community she led. That recollection makes her failure to leave more than a logistical misfortune: she remained until it was too late because she had not expected the settlement’s danger to become unavoidable.

When Jessica could no longer flee and Todd Hewitt was too young to be sent away, she gave him to Ben and Cillian and told them to keep him safe. Her decision carries her remaining purpose into Todd’s life: although she could not take him with her or protect him herself, she arranged for the two men to raise him. Through Ben’s explanation, Jessica’s history connects the founding of New Elizabeth, its violent fall into Prentisstown, and the care that preserved Todd Hewitt.
