Force is sea. Force is drop.

The Last Jedi

Force is sea. Force is drop. is the central image in Aoloiloa’s metaphorical, deliberately elusive description of the Force to Jax Pavan. Jax carries the image beyond its original explanation: if the Force is a sea, time may flow into it drop by drop, making the lives of Jax and Laranth Tarak part of a current he cannot reverse.

A Metaphorical Account of the Force

Jax had once asked Aoloiloa what his perception of the Force was. Aoloiloa answered, “Force is sea. Force is drop. Force is all. Force is not all.” The response gives Jax an image rather than a definition: the Force is at once a sea and a drop, encompassing everything while also resisting the claim that it is simply everything. Its compact oppositions leave the image open to further thought rather than resolving it into a rule.

Time as a Current

Jax connects Aoloiloa’s metaphor to time. If time is a stream, he reasons, it flows into the Force’s sea drop by drop; Laranth Tarak’s life is one drop, and his own is another. The metaphor thus places individual experience within a larger flow without suggesting that a person can command it.

That thought leads Jax to imagine swimming to shore and walking upstream. The possibility is immediately recognized as impossible, but the question it raises is personal: whether he would want to retrace time and do the past differently. The expression therefore frames the longing to undo mistakes through the contrast between time’s imagined direction and the human wish to reverse it.
