Nightsisters
The Last JediThe Nightsisters were one of two outcast orders on Dathomir whose history in the novel is marked by an alliance with the Sith, an attempt to destroy Coruscant, and defeat by the Jedi. Their failed use of the Infinity Gate ended with the destruction of the temple that contained it; the ensuing quarantine of Dathomir also affected the planet’s other clans.
Identity and Origins
The Nightsisters are named alongside the Nightbrothers as two explicitly malevolent orders on Dathomir. Both consisted of outcasts from existing tribes. Many Nightbrothers were human–Zabrak hybrids, a detail that describes the Nightbrothers rather than the Nightsisters themselves. The account gives no comparable description of the Nightsisters’ membership or internal structure.
Jax Pavan’s discussion places the Nightsisters against the wider setting of Dathomiri Force-users, who live and work beyond the more regimented Jedi Order. He recognizes that chanting spells to employ the Force does not make its users any less Force-sensitive. The passage thus distinguishes their way of using the Force from the Jedi’s institutional discipline without presenting the Nightsisters as part of the Jedi tradition.
Alliance and Attack on Coruscant
In the years leading up to the Clone Wars, the Nightsisters and Nightbrothers allied themselves with the Sith. Before that alliance, they had discovered the interstellar Infinity Gate and used it in an effort to destroy Coruscant, then the seat of the Republic. The Gate gave the orders a means to threaten a distant political center, carrying Dathomir’s conflict far beyond the planet.
The account links the Nightsisters’ significance less to their organization’s structure than to this attempted use of the Gate. Their actions made them a danger not only to rival groups on Dathomir but to the Republic itself. The narrative does not specify the details of the orders’ alliance with the Sith or describe the attack’s operational course beyond its intended target and the Gate’s role.
Defeat and Legacy
The Jedi brought the attackers down and destroyed the Dathomir Star Temple Ruins, where the Infinity Gate was housed. The temple’s destruction ended the immediate threat posed by the portal, but the place remained marked by the catastrophe: steam and smoke rose from deep vents torn into native rock, while shards of stone and slag lay scattered across the scorched ground. These remains are associated with the Nightsisters’ horrific weapon, turning the site into a physical record of the order’s violence and defeat.
Thirteen years later, Dathomir had been all but quarantined. That response fell on the planet broadly, not just on the Nightsisters: the narration notes that the measure was unfair to the majority of clans. It also sets out why the Empire had little apparent strategic or material incentive to covet the world, which lacked a useful strategic position, natural resources it might envy, or technology it might fear. The Nightsisters’ history therefore shadows Dathomir’s later isolation, even as the narrative distinguishes the defeated order from the planet’s wider population.
