Palace District

The Last Jedi

The Palace District is the seat of imperial power on Coruscant and the setting for Jax Pavan’s attempt to get close to Darth Vader’s ship. Its monumental Imperial Palace and the guarded approaches to the Imperial Security Bureau turn the district into both a political center and a place where Jax must conceal his identity and keep his connection to the Force hidden.

Setting and Imperial Presence

The Imperial Palace rises from Coruscant’s crust as a vast structure of native stone, duracrete, and transparisteel, crowned with spires that seem to reach greedily into the sky. The Senate District, the Imperial Security Bureau, and Eastport are described as satellites of this massive complex, existing in its shadow. Even from many kilometers away, the Palace exerts a palpable presence over Jax: he feels watched by the Imperial Security Bureau as if it sat atop the world.

Jax Pavan’s Approach

Jax heads for the Palace District after learning that a ship captain is holding, though the reason is unknown. Checking his chrono, he decides to try to get close to Darth Vader’s ship: if Vader has brought Thi Xon Yimmon to Coruscant, Jax reasons, he may be moving him to the place where the Inquisitors are sent. Before setting out, Jax changes into a uniform; a few minutes later, disguised as Lieutenant Pel Kwinn and carrying a large diplomatic pouch, he leaves the ship for the district.

At the Imperial Security Bureau forecourt, Jax turns his attention from the Palace to the guards and the checkpoint ahead. The visible guards are numerous but are all human Imperial Guards, with no Force-sensitive among them. Farther inside, where Darth Vader is in residence, Jax expects stormtroopers and Inquisitors. He crosses the broad plaza without hesitation and presents his identichip at the first checkpoint, keeping the Force tightly coiled within him. His disguise includes blond hair and blue eyes, a transformation substantial enough that even his own Master would not have recognized him.

Narrative Significance

The district’s scale and layered security give physical form to the power Jax is trying to penetrate: the Palace dominates the surrounding institutions, while the forecourt and checkpoint mark the immediate boundary between public approach and more dangerous imperial territory. Jax’s entry is therefore both a concrete reconnaissance attempt and a test of concealment. He arrives not as himself, but as a fabricated Imperial officer, carrying a pouch and suppressing the very ability that might expose him.
