Plan for Brain Surgery on Thi Xon Yimmon
The Last JediThe Plan for Brain Surgery on Thi Xon Yimmon is the Empire’s attempt to defeat the Whiplash leader’s resistance by cutting the connection between his two cerebral cortices. Probus Tesla proposes the procedure after encountering Yimmon’s consciousness, and Darth Vader authorizes it while reserving control of the surgical droid for himself. The plan turns an interrogation into a race against an operation designed to make its prisoner mentally permeable—and gives Jax Pavan a crucial understanding of the danger facing Yimmon.
The Proposed Procedure
Tesla does not claim that Yimmon is a Force adept. Instead, he tells Darth Vader that he sensed something beyond his expectations while in the same room as him, and attributes it to a combination of Yimmon’s extreme intelligence and his species’ dual cortex. From that observation, Tesla proposes a surgical solution: disconnect the cortices so that one can no longer defend or reinforce the other.
The proposal is specific in its logic and brutal in its implication. Yimmon’s resistance is treated not as a boundary to be respected, but as a problem to solve by altering the structure that sustains his consciousness. Tesla imagines that severing the cerebral connection will make Yimmon “permeable” to interrogation. What makes the plan possible, in Tesla’s account, is precisely the dual organization that marks Yimmon’s species; what the operation would do is turn that difference into a vulnerability.
Vader’s Authorization
Vader remains motionless while Tesla explains. Tesla, convinced that he has solved a problem of vital importance to crushing the resistance, is irritated that his Master seems more attentive to an obscure Force phenomenon than to the proposed method. Vader then turns to the viewscreen and orders that their prisoner be taken to the infirmary. He says that he will program the surgical droid himself.
That detail makes the operation more than a speculative suggestion. Vader takes personal charge of the instrument that would carry it out, while the procedure itself is kept beyond ordinary medical access. Tesla is proud of having impressed his Master, but Vader’s next question changes the temperature of the exchange: he asks how Tesla came to know what he has told him about Yimmon. The order advances the operation, while the question signals that Vader is also scrutinizing the source of Tesla’s insight.
Discovery of the Threat
The danger becomes immediate when I-Five reports that Yimmon is being moved. On a screen above the engineering console, Den Dhur and Sacha Swiftbird see six stormtroopers and an Inquisitor escorting Yimmon down a corridor and through sliding doors. I-Five identifies the destination as the medbay, two levels above the high-security area and almost as well protected.
At the medbay’s artificial-intelligence port, I-Five learns that an operating room has been set up and that neurosurgery is planned. The system cannot disclose the procedure: Darth Vader has sealed access to that information himself. The team therefore has the location and urgency, but not the medical details. I-Five moves toward the outer docking portal, where two stormtroopers and security equipment stand between him and his objective, and tells Den and Sacha to enter at the precise moment he leaves. The plan has become a coordinated attempt to cross a guarded threshold before the concealed operation can proceed.
Recognition and Intervention
Jax’s understanding comes through his attempt to conceal his own Force signature, drawing on the residual energy of the robe’s owner while Tesla’s attention is elsewhere. He senses Tesla’s focus on Yimmon’s duality and on separation. The meaning of the Cephalon’s riddle then strikes him: Yimmon’s separation would destroy them all. Jax recognizes that Vader intends to separate the two halves of Yimmon’s brain by surgery, not merely to question him more forcefully.
When Jax and Sacha later drag Tesla’s body into the medbay and leave him just inside the doors, Den is told to lock the entrance and stand by. Jax and Sacha find I-Five at the computer controlling Yimmon’s autonomic processes. Yimmon is reduced to a sleeping, helpless body, and Jax is newly struck by the horror of Vader’s intended procedure. His first question is whether I-Five can wake him. The scene shifts the plan from an abstract surgical threat to an immediate encounter with its intended victim: the rescue has reached the medbay, but the evidence here leaves the outcome of the attempt unresolved.
Significance
The operation links Tesla’s clinical-sounding explanation to Vader’s coercive purpose. The language of cortices, neural support, and surgical programming gives the plan a technical form, but its stated aim is to break a captive by disabling the mental structure that enables resistance. Vader’s personal control of the surgical droid and his seal on the procedure’s details make the medical setting an extension of Imperial security and interrogation rather than an independent place of care.
The plan also creates a chain of unequal knowledge. Tesla identifies a possible method; Vader authorizes and controls it; I-Five uncovers that an operation is imminent but cannot learn its nature from the medbay system; and Jax interprets Tesla’s interest through the riddle’s warning. That recognition supplies the rescue party with the meaning of the threat just as it reaches the room where Yimmon is being kept alive by medical systems. The pivotal danger is not only that Yimmon may be interrogated, but that the means chosen to overcome his resistance could permanently divide the very consciousness the group is trying to save.
