Taozin
The Last JediTaozin is linked to scales that can muddy the Force signature of an Imperial Inquisitor. In the scenes involving Jax Pavan’s covert movements, the scales are significant not as a described creature but as a means of obscuring a Force-user’s presence—and as a practical resource Jax wishes he had obtained.
Scales and Force Signatures
The scales are presented as a masking aid: Imperial Inquisitors use them to blur their Force signatures. Jax recognizes the effect aboard a vessel when he senses an energy presence he identifies as that of an Inquisitor, its signature blurred by Taozin. The account establishes this limited function without describing the creature’s appearance, habitat, or the process by which its scales are acquired or used.
Jax Pavan’s Unfulfilled Plan
During his covert movement through a restricted Imperial complex, Jax regrets not procuring Taozin scales at the market. With Darth Vader nearby, he cannot confidently assess how the bota has affected Vader’s Force abilities, making the possibility of being sensed especially dangerous. Since he has no scales, he relies instead on his intelligence, improvisation, the Force, and the presence of other Force-users in the complex, whose signatures could provide camouflage. He changes into a hooded robe and passes himself off as an Inquisitor, but the robe disguises his appearance rather than supplying the specific Force-masking effect associated with the scales.
An Alternative Form of Camouflage
Later, Jax considers whether the unusually strong Force signature of Laranth Tarak’s tree might obscure his own, in the way he understands Taozin scales to obscure an Inquisitor’s signature. The comparison extends the scales’ narrative importance beyond the missed opportunity at the market: they give Jax a working model for concealment, which he tests against a living plant’s distinct presence in the Force. The passage leaves the outcome of that experiment unstated here.
