Tesla's Lightsaber

The Last Jedi

Probus Tesla’s Sith lightsaber is the red blade that overturns the apparent outcome of his confrontation with Jax Pavan. Its sudden activation gives Sacha Swiftbird the opening to kill Tesla, after which it is placed in Thi Xon Yimmon’s hands and later discussed by Sacha and Jax. The weapon’s importance lies not only in its capacity to kill, but in the reversals surrounding it: it appears when Tesla believes he has the advantage, and remains in circulation after his death.

Identity and Appearance

The book identifies the weapon by its red blade and explicitly calls it a Sith lightsaber. It is distinct from the Jedi lightsaber Tesla believes Jax to possess: Tesla insists that Jax is the last Jedi and has the last Jedi lightsaber, and therefore dismisses the possibility that the presence he senses could be real. The red blade’s appearance directly contradicts that confidence. It is not another Jedi weapon or evidence that Jax has produced a second blade; it belongs to the person about to intervene against Tesla.

The weapon is introduced through sound and proximity before Tesla sees it. During the downward stroke with which he intends to cleave Jax in two, another lightsaber activates so close that Tesla feels static crawling on his skin. He turns and finds a red blade sweeping toward him. The narration pauses over his shock and his final fragment of thought, making the blade’s entrance a reversal in the action rather than a weapon introduced in advance as part of a declared plan.

The Station Confrontation

Tesla’s confidence depends on his interpretation of the situation: he considers Jax the last Jedi and assumes no other Jedi lightsaber can be present. He has already knocked Jax’s weapon aside and driven him backward, then continues the arc of his own blade, augmenting the downward stroke with the Force. The Sith lightsaber cuts into this moment of anticipated triumph. Its activation reveals that Tesla has misjudged the immediate danger, and its sweep interrupts the attack before he can kill Jax.

Sacha stands over the dead Tesla holding the weapon. She remains in stormtrooper armor, her dark hair streaked with silver and damp with sweat; the maroon cowling around Tesla’s neck is a smoking ruin. After deactivating the blade, she remarks on how effective the intervention was. Jax then tells her to help move the Inquisitor’s body out of sight. The scene establishes the weapon’s immediate consequence plainly: Tesla is dead, and the blade that interrupted his attack is still in Sacha’s possession after the confrontation.

Later Possession and Aftermath

The weapon next appears in the escape preparations. Sacha takes the Sith lightsaber and puts it into Yimmon’s hands after handing him Tesla’s robe. The robe is tight across Yimmon’s shoulders, while its cowl accommodates his horns and covers his large cranium; with the red blade, it contributes to a deliberately imposing appearance. Sacha tells him he would scare her. Yimmon answers gamely that he scares himself, then puts a hand on Den Dhur’s shoulder as the Cerean’s weight shifts. In this moment, the weapon is no longer being used to strike Tesla: it has become part of Yimmon’s disguise and his place in the group’s preparations.

Later, Sacha raises the red lightsaber with Jax, who tells her to keep it. The exchange gives the object a final, quieter place in the story after its sudden, violent intervention. The available scenes establish its movement from the confrontation, into Yimmon’s hands, and into a later conversation about keeping it, but do not describe every transfer between those moments or confirm what Sacha ultimately decides. Its significance therefore rests on the changes the text does show: the blade first overturns Tesla’s certainty, then helps shape Yimmon’s appearance, and finally becomes an unresolved question of possession among the survivors.
