Armguard of Tracers

The Legend of William Oh

The Armguard of Tracers is a preserved Relic whose importance lies less in its appearance than in the tactical grammar it imposes on Will’s fighting style. It converts every ranged attack into a temporary hazard: a burning trail remains suspended behind the projectile for ten seconds and inflicts moderate fire damage on anything that touches it. In Will’s hands, the armguard becomes more than equipment. It turns distance into a weapon, corridors into barriers, and an apparent bodily limitation into a different way of organizing violence.

Discovery and Physical Context

The Armguard of Tracers is found in a small chamber whose walls combine steel with stone that has slowly coated it over centuries. A strange red-radiating egg hangs near the ceiling, secured by two metal wires, while a skeleton lies in one corner. The corpse is roughly Will’s size and wears deteriorated roughspun clothing, a wool cloak, and leather boots, but the lower parts of its body have been gnawed away and carried off by a wild animal. The armguard on its left wrist is flawless by contrast, an almost unnaturally intact object amid decay.

The surrounding remains establish the armguard’s status before Will uses it. Beside the skeleton are a sling and a crumbling pouch of apparently glass marbles, while the corpse’s empty other hand offers no hope of another ring. The contrast between the ruined body and the preserved equipment reflects the rules governing Relics: such gear does not seem to deteriorate, and perfectly preserved equipment found with a corpse is probably a Relic even when buried beneath corrosion, rust, landslides, and decades of water damage. The armguard therefore arrives as both salvage and inheritance, detached from the unknown dead and transferred into the next survivor’s campaign.

Equipping the Relic

Will removes the armguard gently and slides it over his own handless wrist, deciding that he will carry its usefulness forward. The action is materially practical but narratively charged: the object is designed for a body that has been lost, yet it fits into the space left by that loss and immediately registers as functional equipment. The System confirms the transfer with the terse notification, “Armguard of Tracers equipped.” Its placement in the gauntlet slot marks it as a ranged modification rather than a general defensive item.

The armguard’s description specifies that whenever the bearer makes a ranged attack, a trail of fire hangs suspended in the air behind the projectile for ten seconds. These tracers burn anything with which they come into contact, causing a moderate amount of fire damage. The effect does not merely make a shot stronger at the moment of impact. It gives the projectile a lingering afterlife, allowing one attack to continue shaping the battlefield after it has passed. The armguard thus rewards positioning, timing, and the deliberate construction of dangerous paths.

Integration with Phantom Hand

The Relic becomes especially powerful when paired with Will’s Phantom Hand. During the fight against the Aberrant Camel Boss, Will sends the hand beside a boulder and accelerates it toward the creature while releasing bullet stones. To his delight, the Armguard of Tracers applies to ranged attacks made by the Phantom Hand. The bullets create a curtain of fire directly in front of the Boss; when the camel tries to halt, it runs through several such curtains, burning and melting most of its upper body to the bone before a trip wire and colliding boulders complete the attack.

The same discovery later becomes a repeatable method rather than a one-time surprise. In the Kaith tunnels, waves of workers charge Will and Loth. Will uses the Phantom Hand to shoot tracers across the workers’ path, forcing the Kaith to push through curtains of fire supplied by the wrist guard and the Ring of Haunting Blood. The lines of fire cut down successive waves, but the encounter also reveals the limits of the tactic: each wave is replaced by another, and the Kaith climb over their fallen brethren without regard for their losses. The armguard provides decisive local control without eliminating the larger logistical threat.

Tactical and Narrative Significance

The Armguard of Tracers changes the meaning of ranged combat for Will. It supports fighting retreats, ambushes, and the defense of narrow routes because its projectiles remain dangerous after they have crossed the air. In a cave system where Will and Loth search for Kaith supply lines rather than seek a direct battle, that distinction matters. Nathan’s Quest is explicitly to find and destroy the supply lines, not to engage the Kaith frontally; the armguard’s lingering fire suits an operation built around obstruction, forced movement, and controlled withdrawal.

Its power also depends on a wider network of tools and spaces. Loth’s insects help the pair navigate branching darkness, glowbug juices mark the route back, and ropes make dangerous gaps traversable. Against the Aberrant Camel, boulders and a trip wire provide the final physical mechanism, while against the Kaith, the tunnel confines enemy movement and makes successive fire curtains effective. The armguard is therefore not an isolated miracle. Its value emerges through cooperation between Relic, ability, terrain, information, and timing.

The object also gains significance from the circumstances of its wearer. Will’s missing hand is not erased by the Relic; the armguard does not restore what was lost or make the body conventionally whole. Instead, it becomes compatible with Phantom Hand and helps produce a combat method that does not depend on ordinary two-handed weapon use. The result is neither simple repair nor sentimental compensation. The armguard remains a piece of inherited gear, but its preserved material form and unusual compatibility allow Will to reorganize action around the body he actually has.

Later Use and Legacy

The armguard remains part of Will’s active equipment during a later crisis, when he dresses one-handed under pressure by putting on his ring, bracer, Cloak of Misty Escape, trousers, and shoes while demons are being driven toward his room. Its presence among the items he hurriedly equips shows that it has become dependable rather than experimental: the Relic is part of the standard kit on which his survival depends.

Its broader legacy is the conversion of a projectile into territory. The Armguard of Tracers does not simply increase damage; it makes every shot leave behind a temporary rule about where enemies may safely go. That function aligns with the book’s recurring emphasis on routes, supply lines, bridges, Key Sites, and inter-floor movement. Will survives not only by overpowering opponents, but by making movement costly and turning the environment into an extension of his attack. The Armguard of Tracers is the clearest material expression of that method.
