Bullet Wasp Larva
The Legend of William OhThe Bullet Wasp Larva is a preserved specimen of a Bullet Wasp and one of the most consequential objects recovered during Will’s looting of a dead household. Though it first appears as an unsettling trophy with no obvious practical use, its value becomes clear when Will offers it to Loth as a bribe. Sacrificed to The Tower, the larva directly changes Loth’s Master of the Vivarium Ability, supplying the direct damage option that his Class had lacked.
Appearance and Discovery
The larva is displayed beneath a glass dome mounted on a wooden foot, suspended in preserving fluid. It is enormous by ordinary larval standards, approximately the size of two fists pressed together, and is curled inward in death. Its plaque identifies it as a Bullet Wasp Larva, but the preserved body gives no visible explanation for why Loth desires it so intensely.
Will discovers the specimen on a high shelf near a doorway while gathering other loot. He has already filled his Phantom Hand with six rings, two amulets, a bangle, and a small dagger, leaving no room for the bulky display. Nevertheless, he removes the ornate fluid-filled stand and carries it under his arm. The decision is partly practical and partly relational: Will knows that Loth wants the larva, and believes he owes Loth gear after receiving the kobold’s help on two occasions. He also anticipates that Travis will object to the theft because the specimen belonged to Travis’s deceased parents.
From Trophy to Sacrifice
The larva changes status when Will uses it in a negotiation with Loth. Loth initially rejects Will’s proposal to seek help from Kobolds, describing them as vile, dirty, unintelligent creatures whose main redeeming quality is an appreciation for traps. Will then produces the Bullet Wasp Larva and asks whether Loth might reconsider if approached nicely. The specimen immediately exposes the material basis of Loth’s resistance: Loth reaches toward it, reconsiders, and asks which clan the larva came from.
Will has forgotten to ask, but the missing information does not prevent the exchange. Loth accepts the bribe and tells Will to hand over the bug. Once he receives it, Loth unscrews the glass container and removes the larva himself. He raises it toward The Tower in a gesture resembling a toast to the gods. A flash of light follows, and the Bullet Wasp disappears, demonstrating that the larva is not merely a collectible or biological curiosity but a valid Sacrifice within the Tower’s system.
Effect on Loth’s Ability
The sacrifice produces a concrete alteration in Loth’s combat capabilities. A Bullet Wasp returns to Loth’s finger, and its temporary buffs subsequently fade, but the important result is the change to Master of the Vivarium. Loth explains that his Class had always lacked a direct damage option. The Bullet Wasp Sacrifice tilts the Ability in a more aggressive direction without removing any of its previous abilities.
The larva therefore functions as an enabling component in a character Build rather than as a weapon wielded directly. Its contribution is developmental: it expands an existing Ability while preserving its earlier range of functions. The object’s apparent stillness and death conceal a latent capacity that becomes active only through the rules of Sacrifice and the Tower’s transformation process.
Value, Exchange, and Significance
The Bullet Wasp Larva links several forms of value. To Travis, it is part of his dead parents’ possessions and therefore evidence of a personal loss as well as an appropriated object. To Will, it is bulky loot, a debt payment, and finally a bargaining instrument. To Loth, it is an irreplaceable resource capable of correcting a structural weakness in his Class. The same preserved body thus moves through competing systems of ownership, obligation, desire, and mechanical utility.
Its importance also exposes the practical logic of the world’s game-like progression. A Sacrifice is not valuable because it is beautiful, alive, or immediately useful; its value lies in the Ability it can unlock or redirect. The larva’s transformation into a vanished offering and then into a more aggressive form of Master of the Vivarium makes the object a material bridge between exploration and advancement. Will’s decision to carry an inconvenient trophy out of the house ultimately changes Loth’s tactical possibilities and helps secure Loth’s cooperation, turning an apparently minor piece of loot into a decisive resource for the Party.
