Class Seed

The Legend of William Oh

A Class Seed is the System’s generated blueprint for a Class, created when a Sacrifice is placed on a Class Trial Altar. It converts a physical offering into a potential identity: the resulting seed names the Class, specifies its attribute distribution, and identifies the domains in which its Abilities will develop. Because the process can fail, and because the quality and condition of the offering affect its odds, Class Seeds turn character creation into a consequential negotiation between scarcity, chance, and long-term power.

Generation and Sacrifice

The Class Seed process begins with a material offering rather than an abstract choice. When Will places a thumb-sized piece of pemmican on the Altar, a beam of light descends upon it, brightens, and consumes it completely. The System then reports that the Sacrifice is suboptimal and that the attempt to generate a Class Seed has failed. It explains that poorly preserved or mixed Sacrifices have a diminished chance of success, confirming that the offering’s physical quality is part of the rule rather than mere ceremony.

The failure does not mean that an inadequate Sacrifice is impossible. Will recognizes that the System has described a reduced chance rather than an absolute prohibition, and he begins considering what remains in his supplies. This distinction makes Class Seed generation probabilistic: a weak offering may be wasted, but it can also succeed, while a valuable item may be consumed with no guarantee of return.

The Seeds Will Produces

Will next offers a piece of leather whose mass is approximately equal to that of the Uru Drake scale. The Altar again blazes with light, and the leather disappears. This time the System reports a retry followed by success and generates the Gravity Goat Class Seed. The seed grants two points of Kinesthetics and one point of Acuity, with Earth and Mobility as its associated domains. The result gives the prospective Class a recognizable mechanical profile: physical movement and terrestrial force are represented not by descriptive flavor alone, but by a precise package of attributes and Ability directions.

Will also places the Uru Drake scale on the rightmost Altar. The System accepts it without the failure warning and generates the Uru Drake Primogenitor Class Seed, assigning one Strength, two Resistance, one Acuity, and one Focus, together with the Spacetime and Meta domains. The scale’s value is therefore revealed to have been greater than its apparent material worth. Will processes the result and accepts that the exceptionally valuable item is already gone; its usefulness has been transformed into a possible Class rather than preserved as equipment or wealth.

The contrast between the two successful results establishes that different Sacrifices do not merely produce stronger or weaker versions of the same Class. They generate distinct configurations. The Gravity Goat seed emphasizes Kinesthetics, Acuity, Earth, and Mobility, while the Uru Drake Primogenitor seed distributes power across Strength, Resistance, Acuity, Focus, Spacetime, and Meta. Class Seed generation is consequently a system of specialization, with the offering shaping the range of a Climber’s future options.

Selection, Abilities, and Build

After the seeds are generated, the System asks Will to choose his Primary Abilities. The Class Seed therefore precedes Ability selection but does not finish the construction of a character. Will pauses over the unfamiliar label Resourceful Climber and studies the Class again, seeking context for how its Abilities might develop before committing his choices. His caution shows that a seed is not simply a reward to accept at face value: it is an interpretive framework whose implications must be understood before its free choices and charges are assigned.

The Class Seed also creates an important tension between immediate survival and future autonomy. Will reflects that another Class might have been less powerful but would have allowed him to choose what he wanted without constantly watching for betrayal. A more powerful seed can therefore carry a social and strategic cost, while a weaker alternative might provide greater control or safety. The System presents class creation as a build decision, but Will experiences it as a decision about the kind of vulnerability he is willing to endure.

Consequences for Progression

The consequences of Class Seed generation extend beyond the Altar scene. Once Will’s Class and Primary Abilities are established, the System tracks Charges, free points, and later advancement through quests and level milestones. His Establishing Quest, Break the supply lines, is issued as a formal System assignment connected to the broader progression structure, and a subsequent quest directs him to ascend to the Second Floor. These later prompts demonstrate that a generated Class is embedded in a larger mechanism of advancement: the seed determines the initial direction, while Abilities, Charges, levels, and quests turn that direction into continuing play.

The seed’s importance is also measured against the bodily and practical demands of Climbing. After the Altar process, Will’s attention returns to hunger and to his new leather boots, an immediate reminder that an elaborate metaphysical selection has not removed ordinary needs. The Class Seed promises a future build, but the Climber must still eat, equip himself, survive danger, and act under the System’s deadlines and rewards.

Significance

Class Seeds make the System’s power visible as both interface and governance. The Altar consumes tangible resources, announces success or failure in procedural language, assigns numerical attributes, and channels later Ability development into named domains. Its apparent objectivity does not eliminate uncertainty; instead, it distributes risk through rules that Will can inspect only after paying their costs. The failed pemmican attempt, the successful leather offering, and the disappearance of the Uru Drake scale together define a world in which identity is manufactured through sacrifice.

For Will, the Class Seed is decisive because it turns an orphan’s lack of inherited security into a permanent build choice. He cannot simply choose an ideal future from a menu. He must gamble with food, crafted materials, and a rare Uru Drake scale, then live with the Classes the Altars produce. The concept therefore links material loss to personal formation: every Class begins as something the Climber is willing to destroy, and every successful seed carries the consequences of that choice into the climb ahead.
