Cloak of Misty Escape
The Legend of William OhThe Cloak of Misty Escape is a torso Relic that converts environmental protection into tactical concealment. Bought by William Oh from Leon after an extended comparison of available equipment, it becomes a recurring survival device: it cools its wearer in extreme heat, hides movement inside a dense fog cloud, and repeatedly turns otherwise desperate encounters into opportunities for escape, rescue, or pursuit.
Properties and Acquisition
The Cloak of Misty Escape provides passive resistance to high-temperature environments because wisps of vapor cool the wearer. Its active ability consumes one Charge to produce a thirty-foot cloud of fog that conceals the user’s movements; the cloak then requires thirty minutes to reform. Leon specifically recommends it for the Third Floor and prices it at fifteen gold, making its environmental function as important as its combat utility.
William Oh does not buy it immediately. He has only fifty gold and insists on seeing everything Leon has available before deciding. After more than two hours of shopping and comparison, he leaves Leon’s General Store with the soft-set Leon recommended, the Cloak of Misty Escape, and the Boots of Outflanking, as well as the Self-Loading Sling, the Greater Sting Ring, and the Pants of Strength. The purchases leave him with eight gold, establishing the cloak as part of a carefully rationed survival build rather than an incidental luxury.
Recurring Tactical Use
The cloak’s value is demonstrated through repeated Charge expenditure. During the camel encounter, its presence is followed by an explosive release of fog after the group receives only the warning sound of a camel spitting. In another confrontation, the cloak has eight of twelve Charges remaining while the Boots of Outflanking are active, pairing concealment with rapid repositioning as open conflict is established.
The cloak is especially important when William Oh faces the Reaper. He recognizes that an effortless earlier kidnapping means he cannot win a direct fight, while the Reaper launches toward him as a smoke-bodied figure carrying a scythe. At that moment, the cloak has only five of twelve Charges remaining. Its repeated activation records the cost of survival: concealment is powerful, but every escape spends a finite reserve.
Heat, Exposure, and Physical Relief
The cloak’s passive cooling function becomes intimate and bodily when William Oh and Brianna emerge from a camouflage-tarp cocoon on the Third Floor. They are sticky and barely alive. William removes his shirt but keeps the cloak around his shoulders, drawing the Relic tightly around himself and shuddering at the cooling sensation. The garment is therefore not merely equipment displayed in an inventory; it intervenes directly between William’s body and the punishing environment.
That scene also gives the cloak a social presence. Brianna wistfully looks at William’s discarded shirt and remarks on his ability to remove it whenever he wants, while her own patterned dress clings to her. The cloak remains on William as both protection and visible evidence of the unequal bodily conditions imposed by the climb. Its practical relief does not remove discomfort, but it makes continued movement possible.
Concealment and Group Survival
Later, when the Will Bus is underway, William wraps a rope around his waist, and Loth’s assistance turns it into a comfortable harness. The Cloak of Misty Escape then releases a thick cloud that obscures all five members of the group, while the Boots of Outflanking remain active. Here the cloak’s design expands from personal escape to coordinated movement: concealment protects a whole traveling formation when William triggers it at the center of the group.
Its most revealing use comes during the battle involving Travis Oilton. William looks up from Loth and sees the massive fog explosion from the cloak; an instant later, Travis shoots out of the side of the cloud. William realizes that this is what the effect looks like when he activates it himself. The observation is tactically important because the cloud blocks the enemy’s view as well as their own. William carries the burning Loth in the crook of his left arm and orders the group to move, while Carrie and Brianna follow and Loth catches fire. The cloak does not end the danger; it creates the visual obstruction that makes flight possible under it.
Narrative Significance
The Cloak of Misty Escape embodies a recurring logic of the climb: survival depends less on overpowering every threat than on controlling exposure, buying time, and turning the environment into cover. Its fog is defensive rather than destructive, yet its repeated use changes the direction of scenes by concealing movement, protecting companions, and enabling retreats from enemies who cannot be defeated directly.
At the same time, the cloak’s Charge count keeps its miracles material and limited. Its cooling vapor, thirty-foot fog cloud, thirty-minute reform period, and declining reserves prevent concealment from becoming effortless invulnerability. Each activation makes the object more visible as an object with a cost, a capacity, and a history of wear. By the time it erupts around William and his companions during the escape with Loth, the cloak has become a portable boundary between the climbers and a world hot, violent, and watchful enough to kill them.
