Gravity Goat

The Legend of William Oh

Gravity Goat is a Floor 2 creature defined by an impossible relationship with gravity and by its value as a Scout-archetype Sacrifice. It first enters the story as the creature whose material identity becomes a Class Seed, producing a combination of kinesthetic aptitude, acuity, earth affinity, and mobility. Later, its living behavior makes that abstract description visible: a Gravity Goat can stand upside down on the underside of a stone overhang, turning the creature into a literal demonstration of the climbing power associated with it.## Class Seed and Sacrifice Gravity Goat is generated during William Oh’s attempt to obtain a Class Seed at the Class Trial Altars. The first Sacrifice, a thumb-sized piece of pemmican, is consumed by the Altar but fails to produce anything. The System identifies it as suboptimal and warns that poorly preserved or mixed Sacrifices have a reduced chance of success. William Oh then dismantles a ruined satchel, tearing out its lining, removing its metal studs, pulling out the stitches with his teeth, and isolating the monster leather as cleanly as he can. The result is a frayed stack of pure leather, with no stitch, stud, or seam remaining.

The leather is also judged suboptimal, but unlike the pemmican it succeeds after a retry. The generated Class Seed is Gravity Goat. Its displayed configuration is two points of Kinesthetics, one point of Acuity, and the affinities Earth and Mobility. William Oh recognizes that the System has effectively given him two Sacrifices in one: the leather produces the class seed while the Uru Drake scale remains available beside the Altar. Gravity Goat thus originates not as a tame companion or a conventional enemy, but as the result of salvage, risk, and the System’s willingness to convert marginal material into a viable class option.

The generation scene also establishes the creature’s place in the economy of the Climb. William Oh has little reliable material and cannot casually waste a potential Sacrifice, so the creature is encountered first as a possibility encoded in the System rather than as an animal studied for its own sake. Its body, or a comparable piece of it, is valuable because it can be translated into a Class Seed or later used to modify an existing Ability.## Powers and Mechanical Function The later description of the Aspect of the Gravity Goat gives the creature a precise mechanical significance. Sacrificing a Gravity Goat strengthens the user’s footing by slightly shifting personal gravity in the direction of the user’s footing. The result is not unrestricted flight or ordinary levitation. It is a controlled alteration of bodily orientation that permits a Climber to move along walls at an acute angle.

This ability belongs to the earth-and-mobility logic already present in the Class Seed. Kinesthetics supplies the bodily competence, Acuity supports the Scout-like utility, Earth anchors the power to surfaces, and Mobility turns that anchoring into traversal. The creature’s power is therefore unusually literal: Gravity Goat makes the body behave as though the surface underfoot has become a new downward direction.

The System also makes the upgrade strategically conditional. The quality of an Ability limits how many upgrades it can contain, and William Oh judges the Gravity Goat option inferior to the possible Aspects of the Immortal Serpent and the Uru Drake. The Immortal Serpent promises more complete healing, while the Uru Drake can grant a breath attack, flight speed, and increased potency for space-time Abilities. Gravity Goat is useful, but its usefulness is specialized, and taking it may influence the direction of later upgrades.## Encounter on the Floating Mountain The creature’s physical strangeness becomes explicit when William Oh and Loth cross a floating mountain. Beneath a massive stone overhang, they hear clattering and look upward to find a goat chewing its cud on the underside of the rock. It watches them with odd, flat eyes while standing upside down, apparently as casually as an ordinary goat might stand on level ground. The scene turns the System’s earlier numerical description into a visual encounter with an animal that treats impossible footing as normal.

William Oh considers killing the creature and sacrificing it to his Aspect of the Goat Ability. The opportunity is immediate, and the creature is exactly the kind of resource the System has taught him to recognize. He rejects the exchange, however, because upgrade slots are limited and the Immortal Serpent and Uru Drake appear to offer stronger developmental paths. His decision is also shaped by a specific hope: an upgrade chain centered on the Immortal Serpent might eventually restore his missing hand by developing healing into regeneration.

Rather than attack, William Oh hisses and makes a shooing gesture. The Gravity Goat startles, hops along the underside of the cliff, and disappears above them. When William Oh identifies it as a Gravity Goat, Loth confirms that such creatures make good Scout-archetype Sacrifices. William Oh replies that one of his own abilities comes from it, and Loth connects the fact to his climbing ability. The encounter therefore functions as recognition rather than acquisition: the creature leaves alive, but its movement confirms the logic of the power William Oh already carries.## Strategic Value and Limits Gravity Goat occupies an ambiguous position in William Oh’s development. It is powerful enough to define a viable Class Seed and to support a useful traversal ability, yet it is not the most desirable upgrade available to him. The creature can make climbing easier and more flexible, but it competes directly with options that might provide flight, offensive range, space-time potency, or the restoration of a lost limb.

That competition reveals how the System turns bodily difference into an optimization problem. William Oh’s missing hand has already reduced his available Relic slots, and his choices are made under the pressure of remaining behind other Climbers. A Gravity Goat sacrifice could improve the movement that keeps him alive, but it would also consume an upgrade opportunity that might address the more consequential loss. The creature’s value is consequently measured not only by what it grants, but by what William Oh must surrender to obtain it.

Its Floor 2 location matters as well. William Oh knows that Gravity Goats exist there, making the creature an attainable early upgrade rather than a purely hypothetical one. Yet attainable does not mean decisive. The encounter presents the goat within reach and leaves the choice unresolved in favor of longer-term possibilities, preserving the tension between a concrete advantage now and a speculative transformation later.## Narrative Significance Gravity Goat gives the Climb’s game-like rules a memorable physical image. The System can announce attributes and affinities in compact displays, but the upside-down goat demonstrates what those categories mean in the world: earth can become directional, mobility can detach from ordinary orientation, and a creature’s natural adaptation can be converted into a human capacity.

The creature also sharpens the story’s recurring contrast between survival and Build design. William Oh is resourceful enough to turn discarded leather into a successful Class Seed, and practical enough to recognize a valuable Sacrifice when he sees one. He is not, however, willing to treat every useful creature as an automatic resource. By sparing the Gravity Goat, he accepts a short-term loss in pursuit of a possible route toward healing and the recovery of his hand.

Gravity Goat thus remains both an animal and a system-defined possibility. The narrative grants it striking independent behavior—the casual upside-down grazing, the startled retreat—while still presenting its primary significance through the choices of a Climber who must decide how much of the nonhuman world to consume in order to remake his own body and future.
