Immortal Serpent
The Legend of William OhThe Immortal Serpent is a rare and valuable creature whose sacrifice grants the Aspect of the Immortal Serpent, one of the most powerful healing options available to Will. Its defining significance lies in the exact boundary it places around regeneration: damage can recede over time, but a limb or organ that has been completely removed remains beyond the ability’s stated reach.
Ability Granted by Sacrifice
Sacrificing an Immortal Serpent grants the Aspect of the Immortal Serpent. Unlike the less powerful options lower on the list of viable Sacrifices, this ability belongs to the special category of “Aspects,” placing it among the most consequential upgrades Will encounters in his search for a stronger build.
The Aspect allows its user to heal more completely than ordinary recovery would permit. Scars and damage, whether external or internal, gradually fade over time. The ability therefore addresses both visible wounds and injuries concealed within the body, making it a sustained process of restoration rather than a single burst of emergency healing.
Limits and Will’s Missing Hand
The ability’s limitation is decisive: only the complete removal of a limb or organ prevents the healing process. Will immediately recognizes what that means for his own condition. The discovery ends his hope that choosing the Aspect by itself will cause his missing hand to grow back, although he continues to imagine that a later Upgrade might eventually add limb regeneration.
That response gives the Immortal Serpent a particular importance in Will’s development. The creature offers genuine bodily repair, but not the total restoration he most urgently wants. Its power narrows the distance between injury and recovery without erasing the consequences of amputation, turning what first appears to be a miraculous solution into a conditional one.
Rarity, Cost, and Acquisition
Obtaining a piece of Immortal Serpent for Sacrifice is expected to be difficult and expensive. Will has never even heard of the creature before examining the list, so he assumes that he may have to hunt one himself. If another person already possesses a Sacrifice, its rarity would likely make it extraordinarily costly.
The practical obstacle is therefore as important as the ability itself. The Immortal Serpent is not an accessible healing resource waiting in ordinary stores or among the common alternatives. Its scarcity makes the Aspect a long-term possibility rather than an immediate remedy, while the price attached to it places bodily recovery within the same system of pursuit, risk, and acquisition that governs Will’s other upgrades.
Comparison with Other Aspects
Will considers the Immortal Serpent alongside other high-value Aspects, including the Aspect of the Uru Drake and the Aspect of the Gravity Goat. The Uru Drake option grants a breath attack, flight, and increased potency for all space-time Abilities, while the Gravity Goat strengthens footing by slightly shifting personal gravity toward the direction of support, allowing wall-climbing at an acute angle.
Against those movement- and combat-oriented powers, the Immortal Serpent is the distinctly restorative choice. Yet its usefulness is shaped by a sharper condition than simple strength: it can erase scars and heal internal damage, but it cannot reverse the complete loss of a hand or organ. Will therefore keeps reading through the remaining Sacrifice options and examines possible upgrades to Phantom Hand, suggesting that the Immortal Serpent alone does not resolve his central physical problem.
Narrative Significance
The Immortal Serpent embodies the difference between healing and restoration. Its Aspect promises that the body can progressively shed the marks of injury, but it leaves permanent absence intact. For Will, that distinction transforms regeneration from an uncomplicated miracle into a calculation involving rarity, cost, future Upgrades, and the precise nature of his wound.
The creature also reinforces the book’s treatment of power as conditional rather than absolute. Even one of the most attractive Aspects has a hard boundary, and the boundary matters because it intersects directly with Will’s amputation. The Immortal Serpent consequently functions not merely as a source of supernatural healing, but as a reminder that advancement can mitigate damage without returning a person to an earlier state.
