Sezz’kenal
The Legend of William OhSezz’kenal is the leader of the Maksu tribe that guards the portal from the Trial back to the Hunting Grounds. His importance lies less in a long personal history than in the concentrated threat he represents: the System identifies him as a vicious caravan raider who has acquired a taste for human flesh, and William Oh must overcome him to qualify for The Climb. Sezz’kenal therefore functions as both a literal enemy commander and the Trial’s threshold guardian, embodying the violence that separates an untested Aspirant from the status of a Climber.
Identity and Reputation
Sezz’kenal leads a tribe of Maksu in a canyon enclosed by sheer cliffs, where jagged crags, narrow footholds, and dense plant life make movement difficult. The Trial’s instructions warn that the portal is guarded by his tribe and specifically name him as a vicious raider of caravans with a taste for human flesh. William Oh retains that description while searching for a way out, reasoning that Sezz’kenal’s raiding habits might eventually draw him and much of the tribe away from the portal. His reputation thus has practical consequences: it shapes William’s escape strategy before the two ever meet and turns the leader’s predictable appetite for raiding into a possible weakness.
Role in William Oh’s Trial
The encounter begins when the Maksu launch an assault on a caravan. William Oh immediately looks for the commander rather than treating the attack as a simple massed fight. Sezz’kenal is positioned at the rear of the assault, wearing an ornate headdress and chanting while a wavering haze of energy gathers around him. He remains outside the caravan’s return-fire range, apparently preparing an Ability capable of changing the battle’s balance. The scene presents him as a battlefield leader who combines command, distance, and supernatural force rather than relying only on physical aggression.
William answers that preparation with an improvised attack. Using one hand, he laboriously loads a nearby rock into his sling, then fires. The projectile strikes Sezz’kenal in the back of the head, dispersing the forming energy and dropping the Maksu leader bonelessly to the ground. The result immediately advances William to level 2 as a Resourceful Climber, making Sezz’kenal’s defeat the first clearly registered milestone of the Trial. His command is broken not by superior equipment or a completed Ability, but by William’s ability to identify the most dangerous target and exploit the limited tools available to him.
Final Confrontation and Death
Sezz’kenal survives the initial blow long enough for a more direct confrontation inside a shrine. He lunges at William’s arm, trying to bite him with projecting fangs. William punches him in the snout, breaking one of the slender teeth, although the exchange cuts William’s knuckles. Sezz’kenal rebounds from the impact with startling agility, striking the far wall and springing back toward William’s face with a tomahawk.
William catches the weapon with his good hand. Sezz’kenal then raises his free hand and begins summoning sickly green energy toward William’s chest. William instinctively uses his Phantom Hand to slap the developing spell away, scattering it against the shrine wall; the impact leaves the wall smoldering and pitted. That interruption creates the opening for the final exchange. William drives an elbow from his wounded arm into Sezz’kenal, wrenches the tomahawk from him, and buries the weapon in the Maksu leader’s skull. Sezz’kenal collapses, and the hatchet slips free with a wet pop while shouting and hurried footsteps gather outside the shrine.
Narrative Significance
Sezz’kenal’s defeat establishes the governing logic of William Oh’s progression. The Trial is designed as a combat ordeal, but William does not win by meeting the enemy on conventionally favorable terms. He studies the command structure, waits for an exposed moment, attacks with a rock, disrupts an Ability with his Phantom Hand, and turns the enemy’s own tomahawk into the finishing weapon. Sezz’kenal’s disappearance from the narrative after his collapse marks the removal of the Trial’s central guardian and confirms that resourcefulness can convert severe physical disadvantage into advancement. His role is consequently that of a concentrated, high-stakes obstacle: a feared raider and dangerous spell-user whose defeat proves that William can read a battlefield, improvise under pressure, and survive the threshold to The Climb.
Command, Combat, and the Logic of Exposure
Sezz’kenal’s authority is conveyed through the way he positions himself during the Maksu assault. Rather than rushing at the caravan with the first wave of raiders, he remains at the rear, outside the defenders’ return-fire range, wearing an ornate headdress and chanting as a wavering haze of energy gathers around him. His distance is tactical: he appears to be preparing an Ability intended to determine the battle’s outcome after the initial attack has fixed the enemy’s attention. William Oh recognizes that the commander, not the nearest raider, is the decisive target. With only one usable hand, he loads a nearby rock into his sling by setting the pouch on the ground, placing the stone inside, and lifting the whole weapon into position. The shot strikes Sezz’kenal in the back of the head, disperses the forming energy, and sends him bonelessly to the ground. The System immediately announces William’s advancement to level 2 as a Resourceful Climber, turning the interruption of Sezz’kenal’s command into a measurable stage of the Trial.
Final Confrontation and Death
Sezz’kenal survives the first attack and forces William Oh into a closer, more dangerous contest inside a shrine. He lunges for William’s arm, trying to bite down with his projecting fangs; William answers with a punch that breaks one of the slender teeth but leaves a gash across his knuckles. The Maksu leader recovers in midair, rebounds from the far wall, and comes back toward William’s face with a tomahawk already swinging. William catches the weapon with his good hand, but Sezz’kenal immediately raises his free hand and begins directing sickly green energy at William’s chest. Acting on instinct, William uses his Phantom Hand to slap the forming spell aside. The displaced energy splashes against the shrine wall, which begins to smolder and pit, revealing the attack’s destructive force even though it failed to reach its intended target. William moves first after the brief shock: he drives the elbow of his wounded arm into Sezz’kenal, tears the tomahawk from his grasp, and buries it in the Maksu leader’s skull. Sezz’kenal collapses, and the hatchet slips free with a wet pop while harsh Maksu shouting and hurried footsteps approach outside the shrine. His death removes the commander guarding the Trial’s exit and completes the defeat of the threshold obstacle that stood between William and the Hunting Grounds.
Narrative Function and Thematic Significance
Sezz’kenal’s importance lies in how completely the Trial reduces a formidable enemy to a problem of observation, timing, and available means. The System presents him as the commander of the Maksu guarding the portal to the Hunting Grounds, while his history as a caravan raider who has acquired a taste for human flesh gives the obstacle a distinct predatory identity rather than making him an interchangeable combatant. Yet the same reputation that marks him as dangerous also makes his behavior legible: William Oh anticipates that Sezz’kenal will eventually leave to raid a caravan, and later identifies him at the rear of the assault, where his preparation of an Ability exposes him as the battle’s decisive point. Sezz’kenal’s strength therefore creates the opening through which he is defeated. His ornate headdress, chanting, gathering energy, physical ferocity, and tomahawk all signify command and menace, but none can compensate for the vulnerability created by concentrating power outside the caravan’s return-fire range.
The repeated reversals of the confrontation sharpen the same principle. A thumb-sized piece of pemmican has already failed to generate a Class Seed at the Class Trial Altars, leaving William without the straightforward advancement he sought. In the canyon, however, improvised action produces the result that formal sacrifice could not: a single rock interrupts Sezz’kenal’s Ability and advances William to level 2 as a Resourceful Climber. The later shrine fight makes the lesson more physical. William’s wounded hand, limited equipment, and lack of conventional advantage do not end the encounter; he catches the tomahawk with his good hand, uses the Phantom Hand to scatter the green spell, and converts Sezz’kenal’s own weapon into the killing blow. The smoldering, pitted shrine wall records the danger of the attack even as its failure records William’s adaptability. Sezz’kenal thus serves as the Trial’s threshold guardian in the fullest sense: his death does not merely remove an enemy, but demonstrates that William can turn constraint, exposure, and hostile force into the means of progression toward The Climb.
