Mia Skai
The Leopard (Jo Nesbø Edition)Mia Skai is the daughter of village policeman Skai, whose memories of her place her at the center of a formative encounter with Tony Leike and Ole. She is described as having lost her former cheerfulness afterward: the episode left a lasting mark on Mia as well as on Ole, whose injury and public humiliation drove him away.
Identity and Background
Mia is identified in the account as Skai’s daughter. Years later, when Harry Hole asks Skai about Tony Leike’s history with her, Skai reacts sharply to the suggestion that Tony had pursued her. His recollections establish Mia not as a distant witness to the village’s violence but as one of the people directly caught in its consequences.
The Encounter with Tony and Ole
In Harry Hole’s reconstruction, Tony is kissing Mia at the edge of the woods near a disco when Ole, who is in love with her, finds them and attacks Tony. Tony responds with extreme violence, drawing a knife and cutting away half of Ole’s tongue before others can stop him. The scene turns Mia’s private connection to Tony into a public confrontation: those who arrive are left stunned, while Ole’s injury makes the encounter—and his thwarted love—impossible to conceal.
Aftermath and Significance
Skai remembers Mia as never again becoming the same happy girl. Yet he also says that she continued to want Tony, a detail that complicates any simple account of her as having turned away from him after the violence. When Harry asks whether Skai suspected Tony of rape, Skai distinguishes that judgment from sexual assault: he calls Tony a rapist, but says he does not believe Tony would sexually abuse someone, reasoning that he would have tried to do so with Mia if that were his nature. Skai’s account of the woods supplies the qualification: Mia would not let Tony go further, and Tony accepted her refusal. Her experience therefore remains bound to an unsettling contrast between the harm and lasting change associated with Tony’s pursuit and Skai’s insistence that, in that particular encounter, Tony stopped when she refused.
