Ulla Swart

The Leopard (Jo Nesbø Edition)

Ulla Swart is a largely offstage figure whose importance in the account of Mikael Bellman’s past comes through the men who describe or claim her. In Manglerud, she was remembered as exceptionally beautiful; her relationship with Julie and the rumors linking her to Bellman set the background for a violent threat against Julie after his release from prison.

Identity and Background

Julie described Ulla as his wife and recalled that she attracted the attention of men throughout Manglerud. Roger Gjendem’s neighborhood sources similarly identified her as the prettiest girl there and noted that she was a year older than Bellman. These details place her at the center of local attention, but the account offers no direct view of her own perspective or choices.

Relationships and Conflict

While Julie was imprisoned, rumors circulated that Ulla and Bellman had been seen together. The account presents this as neighborhood talk, not as a confirmed account of their relationship. Julie’s return from prison was shaped by those rumors: he intended to confront Bellman, but two masked men were waiting when he went to collect his motorcycle. They beat him with iron bars and warned him to stay away from Bellman and Ulla. Sources differed over whether Bellman was one of the attackers; the rumor was that he was not, and that one attacker was Beavis.

Beavis’s Threat and Ulla’s Narrative Role

Julie later identified Beavis as Bellman’s shadow and said that Beavis had nearly beaten him to death, claiming that Ulla belonged to him and Bellman rather than to Julie. The possessive claim makes Ulla the stated pretext for intimidation, while leaving her own wishes unreported. Her role in this recollection is therefore defined less by her actions than by the contest among men over access to her and by the uncertainty surrounding Bellman’s involvement. The contrast between Julie’s description of Ulla as his wife and Beavis’s claim over her exposes the coercive language surrounding her without resolving what Ulla herself wanted.
