Gaeta is a besieged fortress on the edge of the hunting landscape in Sicily, at once physically distant and politically immediate. Its blockade links the stillness of the countryside to the military and political crisis unfolding beyond it.

A Distant Presence in the Landscape

From the hilltop above Donnafugata, Gaeta is not described directly; it enters the scene through the reach of the breeze and the movement of armies. As Don Fabrizio and Don Ciccio rest beneath cork trees, the narrative sweeps outward from the Sicilian hills: the wind ruffles Garibaldi’s hair and, farther away, throws dust into the eyes of Neapolitan soldiers hurriedly reinforcing Gaeta’s battlements. The distance collapses into a single panoramic view, connecting a private hunting excursion with the wider conflict.

The Blockade and the Bourbon Defense

Gaeta’s military danger is made explicit in two linked images. The rifles of General Cialdini are dismaying the Bourbon troops there, while the fortress remains under a tight blockade and its powder magazines are being blown up one by one. When Father Pirrone later reports on the situation to friends gathered in his room, he presents the defense as nearly exhausted: little can be saved, he says, apart from a diminished prospect of honor. His account places Gaeta within a larger uncertainty about the political future, alongside his remarks about Russia, Napoleon III, and risings elsewhere in southern Italy.

Narrative Significance

Gaeta gives the novel’s local scenes a far-reaching political horizon. The hunters’ pause, the dying rabbit, and the soldiers’ struggle occupy the same narrative sweep, but not the same scale of power: human hopes and military resistance alike appear exposed to forces moving beyond any one person’s control. The later report in Father Pirrone’s room brings that distant conflict into the villagers’ immediate concerns, as they anticipate new taxes and conscription. Gaeta thus connects the landscape’s apparent stillness to the weakening Bourbon position and the uncertain state taking shape around it.
