Ferry Departure

Leaving England
A difficult crossing
Futh begins his holiday on a cold outer deck, sickened by the ferry and turning toward memories of his childhood.
The journey is meant to separate him from his recent separation from Angela, but his thoughts keep drawing him back to home.
An unexpected passenger
He befriends Carl and offers him a lift to Utrecht, briefly accepting the possibility of company and a different route.
The outward journey establishes Futh’s uncertainty: even a deliberate departure can become another occasion for hesitation.
The First Hotel

Arrival at Hellhaus
A bright refuge
After missing his motorway turn, Futh reaches Hellhaus late, exhausted and hungry, and sees the hotel’s bright façade as a beacon.
He expects the family-run hotel to offer order and rest after the disorientation of travel.
Welcome withheld
The following morning, Bernard refuses to explain breakfast and tells Futh to leave. Futh cannot make sense of the rebuff and packs alone.
His holiday begins with a small but consequential failure of communication: the place meant to shelter him expels him instead.
Walking Without Breakfast

The First Walk
Hunger and heat
Without breakfast, Futh crosses the Rhine and walks in new boots that rub his feet. His provisions run short under the strong sun.
He asks a local man for water, then continues despite thirst, fatigue and the pain beginning to build in his heels.
A familiar pattern
The physical discomfort recalls an earlier walking holiday with his father, when Futh learned to endure rather than complain.
The day’s route therefore carries both his body and his childhood memories forward, binding present hardship to older neglect.
The Forest Detour

Losing the Route
Diminishing certainty
Futh walks through a darkening forest and begins to fear that the path is enclosing him. With no torch, he can barely see the ground.
The forest makes his ordinary navigational unease feel immediate and physical.
A reduced itinerary
He eventually reaches a station and abandons the remainder of the day’s hike, taking a train to his next stop.
This practical retreat keeps the journey going but also shows how far the holiday has drifted from the controlled circuit he planned.
The Return to Hellhaus

Back at the Bright House
A compromised return
After misreading his route and considering a detour to Utrecht, Futh reaches Hellhaus again as the sun sets.
His car has a flat tyre, so he gives up on visiting Carl and returns to the hotel for the bed and rest he has come to expect.
The unresolved ending
The hotel seems dazzling and almost painful to look at, while Futh longs for its ordinary comforts.
His return completes the walking circuit, but it does not resolve the grief and uncertainty carried through it.
