Bernard attacks Ester’s guest
The Lighthouse (Alison Moore Edition)Bernard’s attack on Ester’s unnamed guest turns a clandestine encounter into an act of violence and a direct warning to Ester. The scene makes the aftermath visible through the damaged bed and the man Bernard has left behind, while keeping the assault itself offstage.
Circumstances
Ester first checks the couple’s private apartment, where she finds Bernard’s holdall but not Bernard. After returning downstairs, she retrieves her rubber gloves and goes into the kitchen. She later takes her cleaning trolley and gloves up again with fresh bedding, cursing quietly as she returns to room ten.
The Attack
On opening the room, Ester sees Bernard walking away from the mess on the bed and from the man he has attacked. The narration offers no details of the blows or the guest’s injuries; it presents the violence through its aftermath and Bernard’s departure from the scene. That withholding leaves the damaged room and the assaulted man as the concrete evidence of what Bernard has done.
Warning and Immediate Aftermath
As Bernard passes Ester in the doorway, he pauses close enough for her to feel the heat of him through his shirt and his breath against her cheek. He tells her, ‘Don’t let there be a next time.’ The warning makes her presence part of the confrontation: he addresses her as he leaves, turning the attack on her guest into an explicit threat about what may happen again. The scene ends with Bernard gone and Ester left to face the room and its aftermath.
