Angela’s recurrent pregnancy loss
The Lighthouse (Alison Moore Edition)Angela’s recurrent pregnancy loss shapes both the couple’s efforts to have a child and the strain between Angela and Futh. The narrative gives no number of pregnancies or medical explanation for the losses, but makes their repetition—and the conflict that follows each one—central to their experience of trying to become parents.
Course and chronology
Angela was thirty when she and Futh met. They tried for a child during their marriage, and she became pregnant more than once; each time, she lost the child. Her final pregnancy came when she was forty-four, some months before she and Futh separated. The account establishes the losses as recurrent without specifying their medical circumstances, and offers no basis for attributing them to a particular cause.
Conflict between Angela and Futh
The attempts themselves became a source of tension. In the aftermath of each loss, Angela accused Futh of urging her to try again before she was ready, regardless of how much time had passed. Futh, in turn, reminded her of her age and the limits he associated with time. Their disagreement was not simply about whether they wanted a child: it concerned the pace and pressure of trying again after grief, and whose understanding of the situation would govern that decision.
Separation and childlessness
When Futh later tells Carl’s mother that he and Angela have separated, he adds that they had no children. The detail places the end of the marriage beside the family they had tried, unsuccessfully, to create. In the same conversation, Futh says that he keeps stick insects and had wanted a dog, but Angela did not want the daily responsibility of walking one. He is fond of the insects, while supposing that they have no sense of him and do not remember him from one day to the next. This small account does not equate pets with children; it does, however, show Futh describing a life without the companionship he had hoped for, after a marriage marked by repeated losses and ultimately ending without children.
