Fenris Ulf

Fenris Ulf is the Captain of the White Witch's Secret Police, a great grey wolf who serves as her most trusted enforcer, messenger, and military commander. He is the instrument through which the Witch's will is made known and her enemies are hunted, and his presence marks the most direct threat the children face before the arrival of Aslan. As a character, he is defined entirely by his role as the Witch's agent: he signs the arrest warrant for Mr. Tumnus, he is dispatched to murder the Beavers and the children, and he leads the Wolf who reports the battle's progress. His death at Peter's hands is the young king's first martial achievement and a turning point in the war.

Role and Authority

Fenris Ulf is introduced not in person but through his official signature. The notice of arrest nailed to the floor of Mr. Tumnus's ruined cave is signed "FENRIS ULF, Captain of the Secret Police," and it charges the Faun with High Treason against the White Witch, comforting her enemies, harbouring spies, and fraternising with Humans. This document establishes Fenris Ulf as the public face of the Witch's legal terror—a bureaucratic title that conceals a predator's violence. When Edmund later arrives at the Witch's castle, he finds a great wolf lying across the threshold; the wolf rises, bristling, and demands the stranger's identity in a growling voice. This wolf is Fenris Ulf himself, and he personally escorts Edmund into the Witch's presence, announcing him with the ambiguous words, "Fortunate favourite of the Queen—or else not so fortunate." The wolf thus controls access to the Witch, acting as both doorkeeper and judge.

Actions and Commands

Fenris Ulf's most significant action is the mission he receives directly from the White Witch. As she prepares her sledge to pursue the children, she calls him to her side and commands: "Take with you the swiftest of your wolves and go at once to the house of the Beavers, and kill whatever you find there. If they are already gone, then make all speed to the Stone Table, but do not be seen. Wait for me there in hiding." Fenris Ulf obeys instantly, shooting away "into the snow and darkness, as quickly as a horse can gallop." He and another wolf reach the Beavers' house, but the snow has covered the trail, and the Beavers and children have already fled to the cave. This failure sets the stage for the Witch's eventual defeat, as Fenris Ulf is unable to intercept the party before they reach Aslan.

Death and Aftermath

Fenris Ulf meets his end at the Stone Table. During the first battle, when Susan is treed by a wolf, Peter rushes forward and kills the beast with a single sword-stroke through the heart. Aslan immediately identifies the slain wolf as Fenris Ulf: "I see another wolf in the thickets. There—behind you. He has just darted away. After him, all of you! He will be going to his mistress." The second wolf, having witnessed the captain's death, flees to report to the Witch, and this report precipitates the final confrontation. Peter's victory over Fenris Ulf earns him the title "Sir Peter Fenris-Bane" from Aslan, marking the wolf's death as the young king's first true martial achievement and a symbolic blow against the Witch's power.
