A Staged Arrival

A Breach in Plain Sight Disguise and Access Mal’akh enters the Capitol in a military-style coat with a concealed arm sling, passing the visitor screening process by exploiting ordinary expectations. The Planted Object He leaves Peter’s hand in the Rotunda and escapes through a disguise change. The attack is both a crime and a message designed to draw Langdon into the building.

Sato Takes Control

A Second Investigation National-Security Concerns Inoue Sato arrives and takes over from Capitol police chief Trent Anderson, treating the incident as more than a local homicide investigation. Conflicting Priorities Langdon wants to find Peter, while Sato demands information that might avert a broader crisis. Their competing aims turn cooperation into a continuing contest of authority.

A Secret Room Opened

The Security Boundary Access Under Pressure Sato forces access to SBB XIII despite Anderson’s reservations and the missing keys. The descent takes the group beyond ordinary offices and into an abandoned subbasement. A Hidden Masonic Space They discover the Chamber of Reflection and the Stone Pyramid. The room’s private symbols complicate the official investigation, forcing the group to confront Peter’s concealed responsibilities.

Flight Through the Library

Escape from Custody Bellamy’s Intervention When Sato tries to detain Langdon and seize the pyramid, Warren Bellamy attacks the officers and leads Langdon out through the Capitol’s service routes. A Moving Hiding Place The fugitives use the Library’s book conveyor and its underground stacks to evade the field team. The escape turns the national-security operation into a pursuit across connected public buildings.

A Crisis Contained

The Stakes Expand A Recording as Leverage Sato reveals that Mal’akh has recorded an initiation and threatens to distribute footage that could provoke public backlash against the Masons and prominent officials. A Narrow Interception The CIA team reaches the Temple as the upload nears completion. A targeted electromagnetic pulse disables the nearby transmission relay, preventing the threatened video from reaching its intended audience.
