Mal’akh’s Attack on the Kalorama Heights Security Guard

The Lost Symbol

Mal’akh’s Attack on the Kalorama Heights Security Guard turns an apparently routine false-alarm check into a violent interruption at a concealed basement window. The scene’s suspense depends on the guard’s methodical, ordinary procedure: the estate seems empty until a small blue glow leads her to a discovery, and before she can report what she has seen, she is struck down.

Call to the Estate

The guard, an underpaid employee of Preferred Security, checks the Kalorama Heights address on her call sheet after 911 receives an urgent report. As with unconfirmed call-ins, 911 has contacted the local alarm company before the police. She arrives without details about the concern, expecting the familiar work of assessing the property and resetting an alarm if necessary.

Nothing initially suggests an emergency. The gated driveway belongs to one of the neighborhood’s largest and quietest estates, but the house is dark and silent, with no alarm sounding and no answer at the intercom or front door. The guard uses her override code to enter the gate, leaves her vehicle running with its yellow bubble light spinning, and begins the required exterior check.

The Perimeter Check

With her flashlight, she examines the doors and windows for signs of a break-in. A black stretch limousine passes the house and slows briefly, but she reads it as a neighbor looking over. She finds nothing out of place as she works around the large property, and the cold has begun to make her shiver by the time she reaches the backyard.

Concluding that no one is home, she reports to the dispatcher that there is no indication of an intruder and that the call is a false alarm. She starts back toward the warmth of her vehicle. The report seems to close the matter, but on the return route she notices a tiny bluish light on the back of the house that she had missed during her first inspection.

The Basement Window

The light comes from a low transom window, apparently serving the basement. Its glass has been blacked out with opaque paint, except for a tiny spot where the coating has peeled away. The guard crouches to look through the gap and can make out little. She taps on the glass and calls out, receiving no answer.

As she knocks, the loose paint chip falls away, opening a clearer view into the basement. The guard leans close and scans the room. What she sees leaves her crouched in abject horror; the scene does not specify what is visible, preserving the discovery as a sudden, withheld revelation rather than identifying its contents.

The Attack

The guard reaches for the radio on her belt, but does not get to use it. A pair of Taser prongs strikes the back of her neck. The electrical shock seizes her muscles, and she pitches forward onto the cold ground, unable even to close her eyes before her face hits.

The attack converts the house’s apparent stillness into evidence of danger: although the guard has found no sign of an intruder on the perimeter, someone is close enough to strike just as she discovers the basement scene. Her routine report of a false alarm gives way to sudden physical helplessness, and the attempt to inspect and communicate what she has found is cut short.
