Masonic Temple

The Lost Symbol

The Masonic Temple is a Scottish Rite building in Washington, known among its members as Heredom and identified by the Masonic Pyramid as the place to search for the Lost Word. Its steep, pyramid-shaped roof turns the building itself into an echo of the pyramid’s imagery; inside, a maze of ceremonial rooms leads to the Temple Room, where Mal’akh’s search converges with the history of his Masonic initiation.

Identity and Name

The building is described as the crown jewel of the Scottish Rite in America. Heredom, its name among the brethren, derives from a legendary Scottish mountain associated with the first chapter of the order. The mountain is imaginary, but the building is not: its sharply sloped roof gives the structure a visible pyramid form and links its name to the architecture.

Heredom also functions as a clue. After arranging remembered symbols from the pyramid according to Franklin’s Order-Eight Magic Square, Robert Langdon recognizes the word Heredom and identifies it not as a destination in Scotland but as a code name for a building in Washington. The clue redirects the search from a mythical landscape to a real, carefully guarded site.

Architecture and Access

The Temple’s interior is difficult to navigate without knowledge of its layout. Warren Bellamy explains that the front doors are sealed from within and that the rear entrance, reached by an access drive and parking area, is the only way in. The rear door has a keypad whose PIN is known only to the brethren; Bellamy provides the code and gives the address as 1733 Sixteenth.

Beyond that entrance, the route passes through the Hall of Regalia, the Hall of Honor, a middle landing, the Atrium, and the Grand Stair. Bellamy describes the building as a maze. An old elevator offers another route upward, but it is noisy and opens in full view of the Temple Room, making it unsuitable for anyone trying to enter quietly. Because Robert Langdon knows the building’s layout, he insists that the team needs him to reach Peter Solomon quickly; Inoue Sato agrees that he should accompany them.

Heredom and the Search for the Lost Word

Mal’akh reaches the building with a rearranged grid of symbols. Its Greek letters and an accompanying symbol spell out the message beneath the House of the Temple. He concludes that the Lost Word is hidden somewhere below the building, though the remaining symbols have not yet shown him exactly where. He expects Peter Solomon, the Worshipful Master, to help him interpret the clues.

The destination is charged with personal history as well as secrecy: the Temple Room is where Peter and his fellow Masons once initiated Mal’akh. Now Mal’akh returns with Peter captive, convinced that the building contains the secret he has pursued. The cipher’s movement from an abstract symbol grid to a specific building makes Heredom at once a physical destination and the apparent key to his search.

The Temple Room

An old elevator carries Mal’akh and Peter to the third floor, where its bronze doors open onto the Temple Room. The room is massive and square, adorned with symbols and lit by moonlight entering through an oculus at the peak of the ceiling. Mal’akh recognizes it as the place where his initiation occurred and thinks of his return as a full circle.

That return reverses the meaning of the earlier ceremony. A room once used to welcome Mal’akh into the brotherhood becomes, in his view, the threshold to its most sublime secret—one many Masons do not even believe exists. His conviction that the Lost Word lies beneath the Temple remains a belief rather than a discovery, but the building’s layered access, symbolic architecture, and ceremonial center give that belief a concrete place to take shape.
