Mercury in Pisces; Saturn conjunct Moon

The Luminaries

Mercury in Pisces; Saturn conjunct Moon is an astrological heading marking a chapter in which confinement gives way, slowly and imperfectly, to recovery. The text does not explain the configuration or assign it a precise astrological effect; its significance here lies in the time-marking structure and the events that follow it.

Chapter Placement and Temporal Frame

The heading appears before a chapter introduction that previews a request from Cowell Devlin, Walter Moody showing his mettle, and George Shepard receiving an unwelcome surprise. The account then locates its characters in the weeks following the autumnal equinox: Anna Wetherell and Emery Staines have remained in the Police Camp gaol since that night. The heading thus precedes a narrative interval shaped by detention and its consequences, rather than a single dated incident.

Confinement and Reunion

Anna and Emery are both held in custody, but under markedly different circumstances. Anna’s bail is set at eight pounds, a sum she cannot pay; unlike earlier, she has neither gold sewn into her clothes nor an employer able to stand surety for her. Emery, meanwhile, has been arrested after his reappearance on charges of fraud, embezzlement, and dereliction. His bail is the standard one pound one shilling, but he elects not to pay it, remaining with Anna to await his summons to the Magistrate’s Court.

Recovery and the Limits of Luck

After their reunion, Anna’s physical condition improves almost at once: her wrists and forearms thicken, her face loses its pinched, starved look, and colour returns to her cheeks. Dr. Gillies, who visits the gaol-house nearly every day in the weeks after the equinox, notes the change with satisfaction. He warns Anna sternly about opium and says her recent collapse should teach her not to smoke again. Because she has already been lucky twice, he cautions that luck cannot be relied upon indefinitely; he prescribes a decreasing dose of laudanum to wean her gradually from the addiction. The chapter’s astrological heading therefore opens onto a grounded account of vulnerability, shared confinement, and recovery pursued by degrees.
