Leaving Ludwigsruhe

Departure from Germany
A choice shaped by work
Fidelis leaves Ludwigsruhe to seek opportunity in America. He carries family tools and a craft that can travel with him.
Home remains in memory
Migration changes where he lives without ending his attachment to his family and town. Distance becomes a recurring condition in his life.
Argus Becomes a Home

A Town Made by Work
A temporary-looking place
Fidelis first sees Argus as exposed and provisional, a small settlement set against an immense horizon. He expects to leave after earning enough money.
Staying takes root
The butcher shop, Eva’s arrival, and the boys’ lives turn Argus into a home. The place becomes meaningful through relationships rather than appearance.
The Twins Return to Germany

Family and Borders
A plan to send the boys back
Tante takes Emil and Erich to Germany, believing family there can raise them better. The decision divides the household across an ocean.
Home becomes contested
The boys grow into a German identity far from their father. A family’s idea of the right home can become another person’s estrangement.
A Prisoner in His Birthplace

Erich’s Unchosen Return
Captivity brings him to America
Erich is transported to a Minnesota POW camp, returning geographically to the country where he was born.
Belonging remains elsewhere
He rejects Fidelis and Markus, choosing the German identity formed during the war. Physical return does not equal emotional homecoming.
The Visit to Ludwigsruhe

Memory Meets the Present
A homecoming for Fidelis
Fidelis returns to Ludwigsruhe and encounters relatives, old streets, and a memorial to the dead. Delphine experiences the town as an outsider.
No simple restoration
The visit brings hospitality and memory but cannot restore the family’s earlier life. Home is both a place and an unfinished history.
