Richland Avenue Bridge
The Minds of Billy MilliganRichland Avenue Bridge is the site of an urgent but inconclusive search for Billy. A rain-obscured sighting of a man in a tan trench coat sends Wanda Pancake from the ward to the bridge, where the gap between what witnesses think they saw and what the searchers can find leaves Billy’s whereabouts uncertain.
Setting and Sighting
The episode begins the day after Billy, overwhelmed by the fear that he is losing the abilities associated with his other personalities, sits on the ward amid amplified noises and unbearably intense colors. In the coffee room, a friend of Wanda’s runs to the window and reports seeing a man in a tan trench coat cross Richland Avenue Bridge and go underneath it.
Rain streaks the window and limits what Wanda can see. A car is parked on the bridge; its driver gets out, looks over the wall, returns to the car, and then goes back to the wall, apparently watching something below. The scene offers no direct confirmation that the man Wanda’s friend saw and the driver’s unseen subject are the same person, but their positions make the bridge the immediate focus of concern.
The Search
Wanda has a sinking feeling that she should check on Billy. She searches the ward, asking staff and patients whether they have seen him, then checks his room. No one has seen him, and his tan trench coat is missing from the closet. Meanwhile, Charlotte Johnson, the unit supervisor, reports that an employee who had been uptown saw Billy on Richland Avenue, and Dr. David Caul has also received a call about him being on the bridge.
The staff are reluctant to send Security after Billy because they fear the uniforms will upset him. Wanda volunteers to go instead, and Clyde Barnhart of Security drives her to Richland Avenue Bridge. She climbs down and searches beneath it among the pipes, then walks along the riverbank looking in every direction. She finds nothing.
An Unresolved Lead
When Wanda returns, the driver of the parked car is still there. She asks whether he saw a man in a tan trench coat; he points toward the nearby university Convocation Center. The gesture redirects the search but does not, in this account, establish that Billy is there or explain what the driver witnessed.
The bridge is therefore more than a location in the search: it is the point where separate, partial observations converge without resolving into certainty. The missing coat, the calls reporting Billy’s presence, and Wanda’s empty search beneath the bridge make his absence tangible, while the driver’s indication of another nearby place leaves the scene open-ended.
