Sibel and Kemal live together in Anadolu Hisarı
The Museum of InnocenceSibel and Kemal’s shared stay at the Anadoluhisarı yali was an attempt to care for a fiancé whose love for another woman had left him emotionally wounded. Sibel later described the arrangement as an act of compassion, but also asked that its private and humiliating circumstances be left out of the book.
Circumstances and Purpose
At the end of the summer of 1975, after Kemal confessed that he was badly smitten by Füsun, Sibel pitied him and wanted to help. She said that they moved together to their yali in Anadoluhisarı so she could nurse him back to health. Their cohabitation therefore began not as a recovery of their engagement’s earlier confidence, but as Sibel’s effort to tend to Kemal while knowing that his feelings were fixed on someone else.
The Length of the Stay
Sibel initially described the stay as lasting a month, then corrected the account: in fact, she and Kemal remained at the yali for three months. The discrepancy makes the episode more than a brief gesture of support. It was an extended period of shared life, though the account does not describe its daily routine or establish that it repaired their relationship.
Disclosure and Its Cost
Sibel later asked the narrator not to include those days in the book because remembering them was humiliating. She said gossip about the matter had been the reason she fell out with her best friend, Nurcihan. Her request shows that the stay’s consequences extended beyond the couple: an effort she remembered as well-intentioned had become socially damaging once it circulated as gossip. The episode thus stands at the intersection of private care and public judgment, with Sibel seeking to control how an intimate and painful period would be remembered.
