The Resourceful Survivor

Small Acts of Survival
Finding Advantages
Darky Gardiner steals or trades for food and other useful goods, keeping his needs small enough to avoid attention. His ingenuity makes him a source of scarce comforts.
A Camp Resource
He uses his access and practical skill to help the prisoners. His survival strategy is not simply self-preservation; it sustains others too.
Tiny’s Collapse

Care After Resentment
The Strong Man Falls
Tiny Middleton collapses under illness and work, and the Goanna beats him. Darky Gardiner sees the former strongman sob as his body fails.
Shared Labour
Darky takes the hammer and helps Tiny resume work by guiding him gently. His patience replaces resentment without pretending the harm has disappeared.
The Soleless Boot

A Body Near Its Limit
Injury on the Track
Darky Gardiner’s boot sole tears away in the muddy jungle. His feet are vulnerable to cuts and infection, and the damaged shoe makes every step dangerous.
No Time to Recover
He tries to keep moving while feverish and weak. The incident turns an ordinary equipment failure into a threat to his survival.
Kota’s Raised Sword

An Execution Abandoned
The Sword Poised
Colonel Kota orders Darky Gardiner kneeling and prepares to behead him. A forgotten haiku disrupts Kota’s concentration and breaks the sequence he depends on.
A Momentary Return
Kota leaves, and Darky opens his eyes to find himself alive. The reprieve does not end the system that has placed his life under another man’s control.
The Beating and Death

A Punishment Without Appeal
The Beating Continues
Darky Gardiner is beaten before the assembled prisoners while Dorrigo Evans’s pleas fail to stop the guards. The punishment lasts as the men struggle to watch and endure their own helplessness.
Death in the Latrine
Badly injured and ill, Darky is later found drowned in the camp latrine. His death leaves the prisoners with grief and the corrosive knowledge that one of them has survived at another’s expense.
