Ajax
The Night CleanerAjax is a veteran whose new strength makes him both a demonstration of Dorian’s effort to build a rival to the Hero Society and one of the crew’s agents in the campaign against Seahill. Having lost everything after returning home, he volunteers to host unlimited strength. Dorian’s account first presents him through a test of that power, then shows the gap between possessing it and being ready to wield it in battle: Ajax can break steel, but Dorian still insists that control must come before action.
Identity and Recruitment
Ajax is identified as a veteran who lost everything when he came home. The narrative gives no further account of his earlier life or the circumstances of that loss, but it establishes the vulnerability with which he enters Dorian’s orbit. He volunteers to host unlimited strength, becoming one of the people through whom Dorian can reproduce the kind of powers associated with the Hero Society. His role is therefore not simply that of a strong recruit: he is evidence of Dorian’s attempt to gather a crew equipped to challenge the established heroes.
Dorian describes Ajax as a large man with black, shaggy hair and a dark beard, an appearance compared to that of a pirate. The physical description is immediately joined to a practical demonstration. Asked to bend a piece of rebar, Ajax grips the metal in his large hands; his muscles flex as the bar slowly bends and then snaps in two. The scene establishes the visible force of his gift without suggesting that raw strength alone has made him a finished fighter. Dorian is impressed by the result, but later events make the distinction between power and mastery central to Ajax’s place in the crew.
Training and Control
Dorian’s crew is organized around powers borrowed from or modeled on those of the Hero Society. He identifies strength among the abilities represented in his ranks, alongside an empath and a shifter, as well as a computer specialist and a killer. Ajax’s contribution is the strength role, and Dorian treats its development as a process requiring practice rather than an ability that becomes fully useful as soon as it is granted. After the rebar test, Dorian tells the recruits to keep practicing and gain control over their new powers before moving on to check the others’ progress.
That instruction becomes consequential when Ajax pushes for action. After returning to the mansion, Dorian finds him waiting on a couch with Monica. Ajax argues that Seahill is already in chaos and that this is the moment to take control. Dorian rejects the claim that the crew is ready. Ajax responds with open defiance, but Dorian’s answer is physical: he flashes in front of Ajax, grips him by the neck, and pins him against a wall. Ajax tries to pull Dorian’s hand away and cannot. Dorian releases him, and Ajax drops to the floor.
The confrontation makes clear that Ajax’s strength has not yet made him Dorian’s equal, or even ready for the offensive he wants to begin. Dorian says Ajax must become one with his borrowed powers and frames readiness as something he alone will judge. He invokes his own long life, dating back to the days of the gods, to enforce that authority, then orders Ajax to continue learning control. Ajax looks at him and nods. The exchange ends the immediate challenge without ending Ajax’s impatience: Dorian recognizes that Ajax wants the promised future, but insists that the timing and direction of the campaign remain his to determine.
The Bridge Operation
When Dorian begins implementing the next part of his plan, Ajax is given a concrete assignment rather than permission to start the larger assault on his own. In the training room, Dorian orders him and Monica to go to the bridge and make the island a playground. Monica approaches Dorian and tries to kiss him; he turns his head, knocks her hand away, and tells her to leave. She shows no visible regret as she departs with Ajax. The scene places Ajax alongside Monica as an operative, while keeping Dorian’s authority over the crew unmistakable.
Dorian identifies the destruction of the bridge as the action that will begin the true chaos. He flashes to a nearby rooftop to watch. It is very early in the morning, and the bridge is empty; a large boom follows, and the structure falls piece by piece into the freezing water. The bridge is described as the only way onto the island, so its destruction is not merely a show of force: it removes the route connecting the island to the outside. Ajax and Monica carry out the operation together, converting Dorian’s instruction into a decisive act against Seahill’s access and setting the citywide conflict in motion.
Role in the Battle
When the fighting begins, Ajax is matched against Leon, whom the combatants consider his equal. This pairing gives Ajax a direct place in the battle rather than leaving him only as a trainee or saboteur. The scene presents the clash as part of a wider series of matchups among the opposing forces: Lilith faces Monica, Phillip faces Ron Presley, and Jesse and Echo fight in animal forms. Ajax’s opponent is therefore one member of a coordinated set of confrontations, each force meeting an adversary selected as a counterpart.
The battle passage does not establish who wins Ajax’s fight with Leon or what becomes of Ajax afterward. What it does show is the progression of his role: recruited as a veteran seeking a new place in the world, used to demonstrate the crew’s borrowed strength, restrained while still learning control, and then entrusted with the bridge operation before entering open combat. The contrast between the snapped rebar and Dorian’s grip on his throat captures the limits of Ajax’s early power; the later pairing with Leon marks his arrival in the conflict Dorian had been preparing him to join.
