Gifted people’s secrecy
The Night CleanerGifted people’s secrecy is a protective but increasingly fragile practice in which people with supernatural abilities conceal their existence and identifying signs from the wider public. It governs Esme’s ordinary routines as well as the wider conflict over powered people; Dorian’s televised declaration that the gifted are among humanity and will no longer stay hidden marks its decisive public rupture.
Secrecy and the Gifted
The distinction between god-given powers and divine ancestry helps explain who is concealed and why. Those whose powers came from the gods were chosen, not born with divine blood. The gods had given humans these abilities so they could protect people after the gods’ own children perished. Esme, the sole surviving demigod, recognizes the contrast between the chosen gifted and the abandoned demigods, whose secrecy exists amid a history of violence rather than divine protection.
Concealment also operates against a mounting social crisis. After a pastor gave people with powers a hallucinogen, civil war began in the streets, though it remained quiet for the moment. The prospect that this conflict would intensify makes secrecy more than a convention: public knowledge of the gifted has become bound up with fear, protection, and the danger of open confrontation.
Concealment in Esme’s Life
Esme’s work places her on both sides of the hidden divide. She takes a hospital night shift because it pays more and lets her do something positive in a worsening world. She also works part time as a nurse at Hero Society headquarters, helping people with powers and, when needed, the heroes who risk their lives to save others. Her private resolve to live hard and love strong sits alongside practical, often exhausting service to people whose abilities remain concealed.
That service includes medical attention and the handling of information. After Phillip tells Esme that the vials containing the blood samples she had collected from the heroes were broken, she knows she will need to collect another set. She had wanted to examine the samples for anomalies, diseases, and vulnerabilities. The scene connects secrecy to careful knowledge-gathering: the gifted are not simply kept out of public view, but their condition is also something Esme studies in order to help protect them.
The concealment reaches Esme’s own body. A golden life thread runs down the middle of her left arm, appearing on her sixteenth birthday; before leaving for work, she catches its light and realizes she has nearly forgotten to cover it. She returns to the bathroom and uses makeup to hide the line, now half the size of her forearm. The gesture makes the rule tangible: concealment is maintained not only through silence but through daily management of a visible mark.
Public Rupture and Consequences
The hidden arrangement breaks when Dorian appears on every channel from the capitol. He tells the world that people with powers are among them and are not going anywhere. His announcement rejects secrecy outright, recasting concealment as a condition the gifted are now refusing rather than a boundary they will continue to observe.
Dorian follows with a demand for change: there is no longer a need to remain hidden in the shadows, he says, and the gifted are being set free. He offers the public a choice between fearing them and joining them, insists that they are present either way, and ties the coming solar eclipse of the century to the beginning of the age of the gifted. The declaration turns a hidden population into an explicit political force and gives the eclipse a public meaning as the threshold of that new era.
The broadcast also makes the declaration a challenge to the heroes. Dorian warns them that they can try to stop his side but will lose everything if they do. Esme and Rose look at one another, aware that the peace they had briefly shared is over and that they must prepare for war. Secrecy’s end thus brings visibility, but not immediate safety: disclosure is accompanied by a threat of conflict, and the public revelation becomes the beginning of open hostilities.
