Jesse

The Night Cleaner

Jesse is the host of Echo’s gift and can shift into any animal at will after extensive practice. Introduced meditating on the ground before the fighting begins, he later takes an animal form and joins Echo in the city’s battle, where the two fight with the force and manner of animals.

Identity and Ability

Jesse’s defining power is a capacity for deliberate transformation: he can become any animal, an ability he developed through much practice. The narration also emphasizes his strength, presenting him as someone capable of bringing down anyone who crosses his path. His animal shifting is therefore not merely a change of appearance; it is the basis for his expected effectiveness in combat.

Before the Battle

When the narrator enters, Jesse is sitting on the ground meditating and does not look up. The narrator accepts his silence without interruption, judging that Jesse’s time to act has not yet come. This quiet preparation contrasts with the destruction being set in motion elsewhere: Ajax and Monica are assigned to take out the bridge, and the narrator watches their work from a nearby rooftop in the early morning, when the bridge is empty.

Role in the City’s Fighting

Once the city becomes a battlefield, Jesse appears alongside Echo, with both taking animal forms and fighting like animals. Their transformation places them among the combatants as the conflict divides into individual matchups, although the account does not specify which animal forms either takes or identify their particular opponents. Jesse’s earlier meditation and the narrator’s confidence in his strength thus lead into a brief but forceful battlefield appearance: his gift, acquired through practice, becomes an active part of the wider fight.
